Political parties and ideologies collide and collude to form the âNew Germany.â
The German mentality rejected intellectual analysis and the plodding debates of individuals that characterized parliamentary government. Instead, it demanded organic unity and a state embodying the principal of authority. It rejected all talk of rights as mere Western selfishness. What it cherished was duty and self-sacrifice for The Fatherland. Values such as faith, family and the need for church schools were promoted to guide the young and to immunize them against evils of radicalism. The 1909 elections at the Weimar convention envisioned a New Republic that would represent a sort of compromised peace between Capitalism and Socialism, which meant the acceptance of individual rights and a powerful state, one strong enough to ensure that citizens exercised their rights in the service of the community. It meant the sanctity of private property and the socialization of monopolies It meant the rejection of egalitarianism and a large-scale redistribution of income to benefit the poor. Sounded great, didn't it?
