Listen to an interview with Hannah Mermelstein, a co-founder of the Birthright Unplugged program, which takes Jewish youth on tours through the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
Produced for CKUT (90.3FM) community radio in Montreal by Aaron Lakoff (aaron@resist.ca).
Birthright Unplugged is a program designed primarily for young Jewish people to visit the Palestinian occupied territories. For six days, participants are brought through the West Bank and are exposed to the daily realtities of Palestinians living under the illegal Israeli occupation.
This program offers a counter-balance to Birthright Israel (though not related or affiliated to it), a program which brings Jewish youth on free trips to Israel, but avoids travelling into the Occupied Territories.
We spoke with Hannah Mermelstein, a co-founder of Birthright Unplugged and a long-time human rights activist in Palestine. Here, she gives us some background on Birthright Unplugged and why this trip is so important for American Jewish youth.
