0426 am 'Get This' news
author: shrike
Summary of the KBOO am news for Wednesday, April 26th, 2006.
1. The Portland City Council is going to vote on a resolution today to set aside funds for low income housing.
2. Okay, so now you've got the house, but what if you get sick? A new study finds that Oregonians without health insurance are more likely to go without necessary medical care than residents in nearly any other state. (Ahhh, the good old days when Oregon led the nation as an example of responsible government with the Oregon Health Plan. It's the vision thing and State vision has become shorter and shorter over the past 4 years or so... ). Oregon has the second highest number of people going without medical care. I believe Louisiana is dead last, but they have an excuse... )
3. And if that doesn't make you sick, try this: A new study shows 41 percent of people with moderate to middle incomes (all 30 or 40 of them!) didn't have health insurance for at least part of last year. (Never mind the fact that no one actually needs the insurance part but everyone needs the healthcare end of the deal.)
4. The conviction of a Lodi California man on terrorism charges has stiffened the Justice Department's rather limp resolve. Lately the government has seen juries starting to reject charges in some high-profile cases. Yesterday 23year-old Hamid Hayat was found guilty of terrorism because he went to a Muslim bible camp in Pakistan. His father was luckier. His was declared a mistrial. The younger Hayat could get 32 years in prison. (These absurdly long sentences guarantee a fresh crop of very angry people for years to come.)
5. Five people whose homes were destroyed in the aftermath of Katrina are suing the Army Corps or Engineers. They also want Congress to set up a Katrina Victims Fund like that established for 9/11 victims.
6. The House is taking up a bill that lays out nearly one billion dollars for the new national intelligence director's office and undisclosed billions for satellites and other spy programs. It's Negroponte's Game and no one else gets a copy of the rules.
7. Patrick Angstrom-Poore reports from a barrio in Caracas, Venezuela, where community radio is a strong source of neighborhood pride and solidarity.
8. Halliburton landed a $2.4 billion dollar no-bid contract to build - what else? - a pipeline. It's a write off and a disaster and makes one wonder, if Halliburton can't build a pipeline, then... ..?
9. Rumsfeld is in Iraq. Condoleeza Rice is there too (But then her travel itinerary looked suspiciously light on Monday... ). Here's Rumsfeld's take on the situation Over There: Iraq and Afghanistan are key to keeping the lid on Iran. But if that doesn't work out, the US meanwhile says the Security Council will consider a draft resolution that would oblige Iran to comply or face possible military action.
10. Shiite militiamen have deployed to Kirkuk - third biggest Iraqi city, full of Kurds, Arabs, Turkmen and a lot of oil - Sorry Don.
11. EU investigators say that the CIA has conducted more than one thousand undeclared flights since 2001 in clear violation of international law. (But, seriously, who's going to stop Big Uncle from stepping right on History's tail???)
12. FOX commentator Tony 'Snow Job' Snow is taking filling the woozy shoes of Scott McClelland. Makes perfect sense, really. McClelland would stand up there and deliver the carefully crafted words from the White House, reporters reported and the vast majority of Americans heard perfectly styled sound bytes on - drum roll, please - FOX news. So basically all that happened is the Administration cut out the middleman.
13. Portland emergency response tech company OnScreen has hired none other than Michael Brown (So when the proposed LNG plant in Astoria emits a 6-mile wide fireball, fer gawdsake don't call Onscreen...
14. Zalmay Khalilzad, former ambassador to Afghanistan, present ambassador to Iraq, future ambassador to Iran says the US is going to be in Iraq for a long time (At least until the decorators finish his apartment in Teheran.)
15. A majority of respondents to a poll reported in ArmyTimes think Rumsfeld should resign. And they should know. They're the guys doing to fighting.
16. Now that Canada has a new conservative Prime Minister, the media is barred from covering repatriation of Canadian soldiers' coffins.
17. Jewish leaders here and in the Middle East as well as analysts everywhere are warning the US that attacking Iran and telling the world that it is for the good of Israel is a terrible idea (Well what the hell are we going to say, 'We did it because we want their oil.'?)
18. In Egypt two more suicide bombers struck just outside a multinational peacekeeping base in the Sinai near the Gaza border.
19. Cisco Systems has got an enormous investment initiative in Saudi Arabia (What? They aren't already there?)
20. Trouble in Paradise: The Sri Lankan government launched strikes on Tamil Tiger rebels in retaliation for a failed assassination attempt that left at least 10 people dead and risked returning the country to war.
21. Bush ordered a temporary halt to deposits to the nation's strategic Oil Reserve. It won't make much difference but it sounds good. Just wait till Tony Snow sinks his fangs into that one... .
22. And here's what Russia is up to: They launched a spy satellite for the Israelis and they are selling sophisticated (Don't you love that word applied to the delivery of death? What? These missiles remember to write thank you notes and always know which fork to use? What?????) anti-aircraft missiles.
23. A federal judge has knocked the government's attempt to file a secret declaration in a lawsuit filed in Oregon challenging the legality of the NSA's warrantless surveillance program.
24. China is all over Africa scooping up oil - but you knew that already because we mentioned it yesterday...
25. Hey kids! Build your own Iraqi police force. You can buy everything you need - from kalasnikovs to ID badges to uniforms - it's all there in the Baghdad bazaar.
26. And now this public service announcement from the Turkish government: Turkey is all set to invade Iraq; Bush (or possibly Tony Snow) just ahs to give the signal...
