Opponents to Canada's security certificate law have been given a second chance to stop it. Bill C-3 was expected to pass the week of Dec 10th in Parliament, but the vote has been delayed until January 2008.
Bill C3 is the government's response to the Feb 2007 Supreme Court ruling that struck down parts of the old security certificate law as unconstitutional. Security Certificates are used to detain non-citizens on the suspicion that they are a threat the national security. The set up has been criticized as two-tiered justice, one for citizens and one for everyone else. It has also been criticized as people held under security certificates ( and their lawyer) are not allowed to see and hence challenge much of the evidence used to detain them.
