A look at the relationships between food, identity, power and resistance in a prison setting.
Emily Aspinwall, Stark Raven Media Collective
Each of us have different emotional, cultural and physical ties to food and the ritual of eating. What happens to these deep, personal connections to food when you are locked in a prison, where everything is about control and the system works to strip away much of your agency?
Rebecca Godderis has talked with prisoners and written about the issues of resistance, identity and food on the inside. Her research was done as part of her Masters thesis completed at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby BC in 2002. Her writing about food in prison has been published in the Howard Journal of Criminal Justice and the Berkeley Journal of Sociology.
