Today popular music is NOT a powerful propaganda arm of the ruling elite. Things were different in WW II days. We'll discuss how the propaganda worked then, the 4 categories propagandistic pop music falls into, and why pop music changed so much since then. More importantly, we'll hear period recordings of this great but now little-played music. And we'll hear a more recent under-played song--"Sky Pilot"-- that contrasts in interesting ways with the '40s hits.
Produced at WWUH-FM, "Public Alternative Radio," at the University of Hartford. Feedback to kdowst@hotmail.com.
SERIES OVERVIEW -- Political and social commentary in a variety of genres. Exploring the gap between what we want ... and what they're trying to make us settle for. "Date recorded" = date of first scheduled broadcast.

To celebrate WWUH's 40th anniversary as Hartford's "alternative" radio station, the "album version" of "Sky Pilot" is played--all 7.5 minutes, in all its U.K.-style antiwar-rock glory. Thanks to Eric Burdon & the Animals, the WWUH volunteer staff, and General Manager--then & now--John Ramsey.
