Today on a special holiday edition of Flashpoints, We spend the hour with Howard Zinn, Alice Walker, Anthony Arnove, Mos Def, Aya de Leon, Melanie DeMore, Steve Earle, Nora el Samahy, John Trudell, and Luis Valdez, reading the voices of a People's History of the United States in part two of a two-part production recorded in Berkeley in November 2006.
In his bestselling book, A People's History of the United States, legendary historian Howard Zinn takes the reader through this country's history based on the words and perspectives of the indigenous, the enslaved and the dispossessed, the revolutionaries, the dissidents, and the activists. Two years ago, Zinn and Anthony Arnove, who together co-wrote Voices of a People's History of the United States, came to Berkeley and brought with them a collective of luminaries, visionaries, writers, musicians and actors to make history come alive onstage. Zinn and Arnove were joined by Alice Walker, Mos Def, Aya de Leon, Melanie DeMore, Steve Earle, Nora el Samahy, John Trudell, and Luis Valdez in this benefit for the Middle East Children's Alliance, The Vanguard Foundation and Speak Out.
