ON MARCH 4, LAST WEEK, STUDENTS IN HUNDREDS OF HIGH SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES WALKED OUT OF CLASSES AND HELD PROTEST RALLIES AND MARCHES AGAINST CUTS IN PUBLIC EDUCATION. THE NEW STUDENT MOVEMENT, WHICH STARTED LAST YEAR IN CALIFORNIA WHEN THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCED IT WOULD RAISE TUITIONS BY 30%, APPEARS TO BE SPREADING NATIONWIDE AS STATES ARE CUTTING EDUCATION FUNDING TO COVER BUDGET DEFICITS CAUSED BY THE ECONOMIC CRISIS.
AT 11:30 AM THIS THURSDAY, TWO TO THREE HUNDRED STUDENTS AND TEACHERS STOPPED CLASSES AT WILLIAM PATERSON UNIVERSITY IN NEW JERSEY AND BEGAN A TWO HOUR PROTEST RALLY.
