As the world watches in horror the continuing disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, it might be wise to remember that there was plenty of warnings against deep sea drilling. And plenty of opposition to oil drilling in general. Perhaps some of the most vehement came nearly 13 years ago from the Uâwa tribe in the remote cloud forest of the Andes. They let it be know that if Occidental Petroleum carried out its plan to drill for oil on their territory, they would commit mass ritual suicide.
