 Hidden Histories
Yesterday marked a turning points of sorts for AIDS awareness. On Nov 7th 1991, basketball legend "Magic" Johnson told the world that he had tested positive for HIV.
He made his announcement live on CNN in Inglewood, CA. In a press conference saying that he would retire immediately and also announced that his wife Cookie and their unborn child did not have HIV, and that he would dedicate his life to "battle this deadly disease".
Until that time, HIV, the virus that causes AIDS was conventionally viewed as a gay white man’s disease. Johnson announcement coupled with his admission of having multiple heterosexual partners during his playing career caste the disease in a wider light.
