TWO WEEKS AGO, NEWS AGENCIES REPORTED THAT THE NORTH KOREAN MILITARY HAD FIRED SCORES OF ARTILLERY SHELLS AT THE ISLAND OF YEONGPYEONG ONLY SEVENTY-FIVE MILES WEST OF THE SOUTH KOREAN CAPITAL OF SEOUL, KILLING FOUR AND INJURING TWENTY, MOSTLY SOLDIERS. THIS INCIDENT COMES ONLY MONTHS AFTER NORTH KOREA SANK A SOUTH KOREAN NAVY VESSEL KILLING FORTY SIX.

THE UNITED STATES MAINTAINS 28,000 TROOPS IN SOUTH KOREA AND NORTH KOREA SAID IT WAS RESPONDING TO JOINT MILITARY DRILLS IN THE AREA. MEANWHILE, THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS GEORGE WASHINGTON IS CURRENTLY CONDUCTING WAR GAMES OFF THE COAST OF KOREA.

ON THURSDAY, AROUND 75 ANTI-WAR ACTIVISTS PARTICIPATED IN A FORUM AT THE BRECHT FORUM IN MANHATTAN TO DISCUSS THE DANGEROUS SITUATION IN THE KOREAN PENSINSULA AND TO PLAN A PROTEST AGAINST U.S. MILITARY INVOLVEMENT.
