Night Transmissions is a 120 minute show featuring vintage radio shows. In this show...
Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theater, “A Test for Murder” .(1980s).
Mack Reynolds short story, “I’m a Stranger Here Myself”.
Mindwebs, “Rebel” (4/4/79).
Authors Playhouse, “Sam Smalls Better Half” (8/16/42).
Notes: This is a weekly program which began on a now defunct low power FM station (KSOW) in Cottage Grove, OR. Since there seems to be some interest in the show I have decided to continue it. In this connection I will post a new show by Tuesday or Wednesday of each week. There is also a 64 bit version.

In the main, each episode consists of four approximately 30-minute long programs (not always, as
sometimes I use a longer form show, so it may be 3 or fewer) and some filler to bring them in at 120 minutes.

Broadcast Advisories

Use these programs in any way that suits you, commercial, non-commercial (well, don't sell it). Use them on your low power FM station or your AM station. Stream it on your internet station or stream. Whatever. Edit them if you want to, however you want to! I'm easy. In a few cases commercials have been left in but in those cases there is disclaimer stating that they are there for "historical perspective" only. I have edited out any underwriter spots that once existed. There is no comment about run times ( i.e. "It's Sunday night at 10 pm and this is Night Transmissions.") Also I have edited out any mention of the town I live in. In other words I have endeavored to make make these programs as "Evergreen" and global as possible. I would even consider making (at some point) shows that are tailored to some degree for specific locations. In most cases the mp3 file runs a little longer than 120 minutes. However, in all cases the main show comes in at under 120 minutes; anything in excess of 120 minutes is just music that can safely be faded out.

As of show 21 there are 30 second musical interludes at 30,60 and 90 minutes. with the last 5 to 10 minutes or so of the show uninterrupted music that can be faded out on without too much ado, Exact times will be in the mp3 comment tag

If you do broadcast or stream these I'd really be grateful if you dropped me a note.

This episode contains the following segments..
Segment One And Two:

Is an episode from Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theater entitled, “A Test for Murder”.

Cape Cod Radio Mystery Theater was a grass-roots theater troupe established in 1982 for the purpose of continuing the tradition of Old Time Radio through a series of original mysteries and thrillers set on Cape Cod.

Series author, Steven Thomas Oney, is a recipient of the prestigious Raven Award given by the Mystery Writers of America. Past winners have included Alfred Hitchcock, Edward Gorey, Vincent Price, Angela Lansbury, Eudora Welty and Steven Bochco.

Also included in this segment is a short story from the Librivox project. From Amazing Stories for December of 1960 is the story, “I’m a Stranger Here Myself” by Dallas McCord Reynolds.
Segment Three:

Is the episode of MindWebs for April 4th of 1979. It’s the adaptation of a Ward Moore story, “Rebel”.

MindWebs, itself, was a program of science fiction stories that ran on WHA radio in Madison Wisconsin from 1976 to 1984. The programs are actually more like audio books than audio drama, or really, maybe just someplace in between. The producers of the show took some of the very best science fiction short stories and gave them a dramatic reading with multiple performers taking the parts of various characters. These performances are rounded off with the addition of good, atmospheric background music and excellent, realistic sound effects.

In my humble opinion this show despite its limitations is about as good as it gets.

You may never have heard of Ward Moore. He was born in 1903 and died in 1978.

During his lifetime Moore was hardly what anyone could call prolific, publishing only a handful of novels and another handful or three of short stories. He is best remembered for two of his novels, 1947′s Greener Than You Think and 1953′s alternative history novel, Bring the Jubilee. Which is a story about what it might have been like if the South had won the Civil War.

I know there are other alternative history novels written prior to this one. But it is the first one I remember reading.

“Rebel”, was published in The Magazine Of Fantasy and Science Fiction for Feb. of 1962.

Segment Four:

Authors Playhouse, “Sam Smalls Better Half” (August 16, 1942)

Authors’ Playhouse was a radio series, created by Wynn Wright that aired on the NBC Blue Network from March 5, 1941 until October 1941. It then moved to the NBC Red Network where it was heard until June 4, 1945.

The series featured adaptations of stories by famous authors, such as Nelson Bond, Paul Gallico, W.W. Jacobs, William Saroyan and James Thurber.

One of the more entertaining, amusing programs I’ve heard in a while, “Sam Small’s Better Half” is based on a short story by Eric Knight which was originally published in the bimonthly Story magazine’s March and April issue. In this story the title character has been split into two people by means of a rough encounter with a lamppost on his way home from the pub.

All sorts of problems ensue.

Knight, who is sometimes called, an English James Thurber, wrote a number of stories featuring Sam Small. These stories were collected in the volume, Sam Small flies again (recently republished as The Flying Yorkshireman).

Eric Knight’s writing career came to a close in 1943 at the age of 46 with his death while on a mission for the English military.
