James Fadiman had studied under Richard Alpert at Harvard University and then went on to complete his Masters and PhD in Psychology with an unprecedented focus on studying Psychedelics at Stanford University.

He taught at Stanford and other learning institutions and co-founded the graduate school, the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology in 1975.
