Latin American labor activists report on wages, work environments and economic conditions precipitated by neoliberalist policies that have forced people off of farms and into sweatshops. Marina Rios of the Women Garment Workers Organizing Project talks about maquiladoras in El Salvador where companies such as The Gap and Baby Guess subcontract factories to make their clothing lines. Hannah Fisch of the U.S. Guatemala Labor Education Project says that garment workers in Guatemala are sometimes forced to work 30 hour sifts in abysmal conditions. And Mary Tong of the Support Committee for Maquiladora Workers discusses an epidemic of bierth defects at industrial parks along the U.S.-Mexico border where maquiladora workers assemble electronic products.
