Prisons in both Canada and the United States are filled with people of colour. In Canada, a fifth of all prisoners are First Nations. In the US, almost half the people in jail are Black. Wende Marshall is a cultural anthropologist. She recently wrote an article on mass incarceration and racism for Al Jazeera.
