The Hanford Site lies on the Columbia River in the state of Washington. It was established in 1943 to manufacture plutonium for the U.S. nuclear weapons program. Billions of dollars have been spent on clean-up but highly radioactive waste continues to leak into the groundwater. Tom Carpenter is executive director of the organization Hanford Challenge.
