Parenti argues that empires are about class and wealth, not nationalism. Our empire is ruinously expensive, but the expense is paid by the 99% in order to make the 1% even richer. The costs include not only dollars but also environmental damage, the gutting of the civilian economy, loss of liberty, degradation of politics and public discourse, increasing poverty, many deaths and injuries of our soldiers, and many others.
The gloomy picture is enlivened by Parenti's trademark wit and humor.
Recorded in November 1994. Original recording by Peoples Video-Audio, available at radio4all.net. I have condensed Part 2 slightly in order to fit our timeslot.
New World Notes is produced under the auspices (Latin for "unisex bathroom") of WWUH-FM, a community service of that beacon of light in darkest Connecticut, the University of Hartford.
