Earlier this spring, it was the speaker of the legislature, Gary Carr, a Tory himself, who suggested during a radio interview that Eves was not fit to govern. While his comments likely sent shock waves through the Tory party, he was just confirming what most of us have known for a long time.
Clearly concerned with their trailing position in the polls, the Tories Spring 2003 throne speech was an exercise in pre-election banality. Dalton McGuintys media line in response, was simply that the "Tories were stealing Liberal ideas". With the cutting of grass along provincial highways as a major budget highlight, its hard to say why anyone would even want to fight over who thought of such things first.
On May 13th, 2003, Tory Culture Minister, David Tsubouchi awarded the 70 member Markham Lawn Bowling Club a $39,000.00 grant for new lights, new fences and new lawn bowls. Evidently the Tories have a very specific notion of just what kind of cultural practices they will support.
Just a reminder The Liberals and NDP extended the common parliamentary privilege to Eves as party leader by not running any serious candidate against him in his bid for MPP. As such it was not the people of Ontario who elected Ernie Eves Premier, but 14,000 Tory delegates at the PC Leadership Convention.
BACKGROUND INFO ON THE ONTARIO COMMON FRONT
Originally founded to establish and legitimize a province wide network of activists, anarchists, militants, revolutionaries and others, the Common Front gained support and notoriety after participating in the successful campaign to Defeat Harris in 2001.
The Common Front is built on the premise of honor and justice. We have people and resources located along most major highways and rail lines in this province. We have people and resources located in most cities, large and small, and First Nations communities in this province and understand the power that exists within a collective threat.
In 2001, First Nations, poor and homeless people organized in the spirit of decency, justice and compassion to defeat the common enemy in Mike Harris. While Ontarians may finally be rid of him, it is now painfully clear that this same government and new premier are preparing to run an upcoming election on the backs of refugees, our homeless sisters and brothers and poor people generally. We believe it would be a disgrace to allow this government to simply be defeated at the polls. In the Common Front we dont participate in voting strategies. There are no concessions or promises that can bring Dudley George or Kimberly Rogers back to life. There are no concessions that can be made to bring back the lives of the hundreds of poor and homeless people who have frozen and died in the streets of this province. There are no concessions that will return the thousands of First Nations children who have been taken form their families and their communities because this government has legislated their poverty.
The Common Front will send speakers and organizers to any city, town or First Nations community that wants to get involved. We encourage people to organize public meetings, meals and gatherings in their area. An agenda that creates and maintains a perpetual state of impoverishment and the political institutions that are responsible for that agenda can be fought. We will assist communities in developing the necessary strategies to engage in such a fight and allow their members to find the hope and pride that is inherent to resistance.
