Former Rwandan intelligence chief Col. Patrick Karegeya was apparently strangled to death in a hotel room in Johannesburg on New Years' Eve. Colonel Karegeya, a refugee in South Africa, had condemned the authoritarian regime of Paul Kagame. Other prominent critics of Kagame have been killed in recent years.
