Since July 26 about 18 people from across Canada have been travelling south by bicycle from Vancouver B.C. Their destination is Cancun, Mexico where they will arrive Sept 10 to join thousands of indigenous farmers, trade unionists, environmentalists, acedemics, students, food safety advocates, and human rights activists who are being left out of the 5th Ministerial of the WTO, meeting there to hammer out an agreement on trade regulations and agriculture subsidies. Their campaign, Deconstructing Dinner, was initiated by members of the Sierra Youth Coalition, a Canada-wide environmental organization. The cyclists aim is to provide information about the complexities of the WTO trade negotiations to communities in North America, while simultaneously providing a sustainable transportation alternative for activists planning to demonstrate in Cancun. On Tuesday, August 19 the Deconstructing Dinner campaign arrived in Santa Cruz, CA on the journey. I had an opportunity to speak with two of the cyclists, Melissa and Amy. http://www.sierrayouthcoalition.com/wto
