The entire broadcast this morning is dedicated to the memory of a remarkable human being, Dr. Eyad El Sarraj, a psychiatrist and physician who founded and directed the Gaza Mental Health Center. Dr. Sarraj died December 17, 2013, and his friends here in the Boston area, and there are many, held a special commemorative service in Cambridge on October 28th to honor his work.

Although Dr. El Sarraj was there for everyone, his focus was on caring for the children of Gaza, a population of children who are deeply traumatized by the continuing reign of terror perpetrated by the Israeli military. Every child in Gaza, eight years or over, has had to endure at least 4 sustained military bombardments, the likes of Cast Lead, that is once every two years, and that has left an entire generation of children traumatized. No one one escapes the scars of that kind of bombardment and wholesale devastation. That was Dr. Sarraj’s challenge. Helping those children deal with the trauma of war.

But Dr. El Sarraj’s reach was far beyond Gaza. He also touched the lives of many of us in Cambridge who were fortunate enough to know him and who worked to support him and the work of the Gaza Mental Health Center.

This morning you will hear three of his friends and colleagues speak about the work of Dr. Sarraj, and life in Gaza: Nancy Murray, founder of the Gaza Mental Health Foundation, Sarah Roy, Middle East researcher at Harvard, and Dr. Noam Chomsky.

The introduction is by Hillary Rantisi.

The full proceedings include several more speakers and some beautiful Arabic music. These are posted independently at https://archive.org/details/ElSarrajTribute-141028.

This Week In Palestine (a weekly part of Truth and Justice Radio) is an award-winning three-quarter-hour segment of news from Palestine and discussion of issues relevant to the Palestinians' struggle for freedom from Israel's brutal military occupation and colonization of their homeland. It speaks from the point of view of Palestinians and those who care about them.

It's a regular part of Truth and Justice Radio, aired Sundays 6-10am ET on WZBC 90.3FM, Newton, MA, streaming and archived for two weeks at wzbc.org; TJR's website, truthandjusticeradio.org, has a link to This Week In Palestine archives back thru 1-6-2008; earlier editions are obtainable from radio4all.net or by navigating through our playlists. (At this important time, TJR has been airing a lot of Palestine coverage IN ADDITION to that provided by This Week In Palestine.) We hope you'll write to us at tjr@bluebottle.com if you rebroadcast our work, or have questions or comments.
