Walmart and Ferguson Protests Spread Across the Country This Holiday season. Mass protests also fanned out across the nation in the aftershock of the grand jury decision to not indict patrolman Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown who was 18 years old and unarmed in Ferguson, MO. Protesters are making the connection to the long standing epidemic of police killings of unarmed people of color throughout the U.S. , the most recent of which also include the 12 year old Tamir Rice in Cleveland, Eric Garner in Staten Island and Akai Gurley in Brooklyn.
There were also demonstrations, marches and sit-in strikes at 1,600 Walmart stores across the country, calling on the company to pay workers a minimum of $15/hour, provide full-time work with health care and union rights. The countrys largest employer and the Waltons "Walmarts majority owners "are abusing their power and hurting American families by allowing Walmart to violate workers rights. While the majority of Walmart workers are paid less than $25,000 a year, Walmart brings in more the $16 billion in annual profits; and the Walton family has built up nearly $150 billion in wealth.
