The focus this week is on the children of Palestine, who really suffer terribly under this Israeli occupation. Presenter Ivan Karakashian spoke at the Tree of Life Conference last month, where this recording was made. As he explains (and you'll hear some actual sounds), Palestinian children are subject to arrest and jailing on a whim by Israel's military. The arrests are done by teams of armed Israeli soldiers who find and drag the children out of bed in predawn hours. The parents don't learn where their child is taken. The arrests are for such "offenses" as "throwing stones" or insulting the "honor" of a soldier! There is no Miranda warning, no attorney rights. Keep in mind these are children as young as 6! Jail sentences abound! Meanwhile, Israeli children can throw stones perfectly legally, and they never risk arrest by any soldier for any reason.
The presentation included a power point presentation but Ivan narrates through the power point visuals, making his address applicable for radio.
Ivan Karakashian is Advocacy Unit Coordinator at Defense for Children International-Palestine, an independent child rights organization dedicated to defending and promoting the rights of children living under Israeli military occupation.
Before our main feature, some breaking news:
The consequences of the U Illinois firing of Stephen Salaita are growing. Now UI is being confronted by its own department heads and by other academics whom it wants to attract.
The American Anthropological Assocation recently voted 60% effectively in support of BDS (Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions).
And the giant real estate brokerage REMAX, which promotes the sale of new homes in Israel's illegal settlements, is now facing boycott rallies at many of its thousands of offices, including Boston and Somerville.
This Week In Palestine (a weekly part of Truth and Justice Radio) is an award-winning three-quarter-hour segment of news from Palestine and discussion of issues relevant to the Palestinians' struggle for freedom from Israel's brutal military occupation and colonization of their homeland. It speaks from the point of view of Palestinians and those who care about them.
It's a regular part of Truth and Justice Radio, aired Sundays 6-10am ET on WZBC 90.3FM, Newton, MA, streaming and archived for two weeks at wzbc.org; TJR's website, truthandjusticeradio.org, has a link to This Week In Palestine archives back thru 1-6-2008; earlier editions are obtainable from radio4all.net or by navigating through our playlists. (At this important time, TJR has been airing a lot of Palestine coverage IN ADDITION to that provided by This Week In Palestine.)
