On The Commons is a weekly radio show dedicated to discussing the many issues surrounding mandatory homeowner associations, the fastest growing form of residential housing in the nation.
The voices of homeowners in common ownership developments, frustrated, angry and appalled at not having an agency responsible for ensuring the honest and lawful operations of their associations, are growing louder. As associations assume greater powers, whether given by state statute or simply assumed by boards and their support groups, the abuses and horror stories grow. Some state governments, recognizing this as a growing problem, have made provisions for an ombudsman with the idea of mainly "educating" all concerned in HOAs. Is that the answer? If homeowners, board members, managers and association attorneys were all educated on how to fulfill their respective roles, would associations be happy places to live for a change?
On The Commons with me this week is Eldon Hardy. Eldon is a nationally trained arbitrator and the second HOA ombudsman to hold the position in Nevada . He believed that with his background that he would be able to make sense and restore a sense of peace out of the chaos that seems to be part and parcel of associations. Join us On The Commons this Saturday, November 22, 2003. We'll find out if his job held any unexpected surprises, we'll talk about his observations about associations and hear some of his thoughts on the subject.
