Robin Philpot, the 2015-16 recipient of the “National Patriot of the Year” award bestowed by the National St. Jean Baptiste Society explains the history of the honor, which is awarded every November to cultural figures involved in the general political struggle.

The commemoration events are held in November to remember patriots who fought against the British colonial power in the province.

Philpot explains the memorial arch that over looked horseshoe Falls at Niagara and commemorated the rebellions of Upper Canada (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Quebec). The panels, called the Mackenzie panels, exemplified people fighting for responsible government, liberty, and freedom. Philpot stresses the alliance between Upper and Lower Canada.
