WINGS #43-23 Global Homelessness

Feb. 5, 2024, 7:12 p.m.
Human displacement and homelessness keep growing and growing. In a "parable" of uncertain attribution, there's a community struggling to save babies who float down river in increasing numbers, and someone says "Let's find out who's putting them in there." Brazilian environmentalist and organizer Magda Renner made it her duty to find out. Renner passed away in 2016, at nearly 90 years of age. This is her address to the World Women's Congress for a Healthy Planet in 1991. On her list of causes are war, mining, land grabs, nuclear radiation, pesticides, masculine-style politics and development, and environmental destruction. She says women need to be in decision-making but not lose their humane values when they enter that realm. This meeting attended by 1500 women from around the world was a lead-in to the first UN Conference on the Environment in Rio de Janeiro, 1992. Update 2024.

Sonic Café #374/More of Everything!

Feb. 2, 2024, 6:50 p.m.
Sonic Café, The More You Get, that’s Mose Allison from the 1988 Gimcracks and Gegaws album, love that title. Hey, I’m Scott Clark and this is episode 374, welcome to the café. This time the Sonic Café taps into our consumerist culture, of getting more stuff, cheaper and faster in a thing we’re calling More of Everything. Our music mix is pulled from 51 years. Every tune in this set is either about wanting more, or conversely the question, how much is too much. Listen for The Police, Yes, Frank Zappa, bluesman Leo Welch, Goo Goo Dolls, Ani DiFranco and of course many more. Also, comedian Ronny Chieng describes America as the land of the free, and the land of never leaving your houses in a rant about Amazon Prime not being fast enough, so they gave us Amazon Now. Funny stuff and great observations all straight ahead as the Sonic Café brings you more of everything, in another episode of intelligent eclectic music, comedy and pop culture, from way out here in the Pacific Northwest. Here’s More Than Ever, this is Robert Palmer, and as always, we’re the Sonic Café.

Wars and rumors of wars...famine...(political) earthquakes

Feb. 1, 2024, 4:23 a.m.
There will be wars and rumors of wars...famine...(political) earthquakes. Mathew had it right, at least the phrasing because now we are entering a period of international clashes. America is desperately and brutally trying to maintain its delusion of a world order under its control. China and Russia most notably are refusing to give way to US dictat, the wider battlefront is in Gaza, Yemen, Iraq, and Syria. Since the revolution removing the Shah, Iran has been a source of inspiration in the Muslim world, driving the US and Israel into violent frustration. All anti-colonial forces around the globe need to see this picture clearly to save Gaza, defend Syria and completely remove the western "powers" from the region. Again, to borrow from Mathew, this is going to be a time of the "painful birth" of a multi-polar more democratic world.

Jacob Vigdor: College Admissions Quandries

Jan. 31, 2024, 2:06 a.m.
Whether it be standardized testing, grades, extracurricular activities or personal essays, the question of how to level the playing field in education is quite a challenge. This week on Sea Change Radio, we take a deep dive into higher education admissions and inequities in this country with Jacob Vigdor, a Professor of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Washington. We discuss the flawed measures we use to evaluate teenage pupils and ask what the goals should actually be for college admissions officers? Are we looking for students to get good grades and make a lot of money, or become leaders in their communities and help spark thoughtful debate among their peers? We examine the shortcomings of standardized testing and grades, explore admissions systems at most “elite" schools, and try to come up with some solutions to the problem.
