Eriel Deranger + Bill Plotkin
Nov. 14, 2023, 8:51 p.m.
This week on Sea Change Radio, we dig into the archives to hear from someone who works to amplify first people’s voices in the fight for climate justice. We speak with the Executive Director of Indigenous Climate Action, Eriel Deranger. We discuss the intersection of the indigenous people’s and the Black Lives Matter movements, take a look at her organization’s climate report, and get an update on the Keystone XL pipeline. Then, we take a breath to learn a bit about ourselves from Bill Plotkin, an author, psychologist and spiritual ecologist. We dive into Plotkin’s teachings, outlined in his book, “The Journey of Soul Initiation,” about moving from adolescence into adulthood (both metaphorically and figuratively), and how we can all evolve as individuals to become better stewards of the planet.

Some old favourites on Backbeat this week, lots of stuff from Cajun country in Louisiana, swamp pop and country from a future rock star. We've got a 1950s classic sung by a guy who finished his career as a school janitor - and had no complaints. We'll hear some Jamaican hits, an early Aretha Franklin record and just what did country folk think about the new-fangled TV in 1952? Well some liked it, Grampa Jones didn't.

Cease Fire!! Rally Near Biden Fund Raiser - West Town Chicago
Nov. 11, 2023, 9:19 p.m.
Rally demanding a CEASE FIRE!! in Gaza.
President Biden, stopped in Chicago to brown nose for money hoping to rescue his reelection in November of 2024. The private fundraiser he attended was surrounded by cops and Federal agents. Rally organizers found its location in the gentrifying industrial area of West Town and informed people with social media as they headed into the downtown. In an attempt to hinder attendance, the CTA discontinued service to the nearest rapid transit stops. But people committed to protest Biden's presence, exited early and walked 25 minutes, following a map on their phones. Scheduled for 3pm by 4:20, when I arrived, close to a thousand people were in and spreading out from the intersection of Armour and Huron while others, in spite of police hindrance, found their way through alleys, back fences and one open street. My estimate of the growing crowd was confirmed by an ABC-TV reporter some hours later. "Thousands of people, shoulder to shoulder, for several city blocks" rallied near where President Biden was present at a private fund raiser in Chicago. While he said thousands, the in studio flacks and the kyron claimed "hundreds", typical suppression from the establishment's corporate press, to down play the anger and disgust that is motivating people to challenge the genocidal acts being authorized by their representatives who, similar to Palestinians in Gaza are are held hostage by the Zionist State of Israel.

Martha McCabe– "Culture and Racism"
Nov. 10, 2023, 5:19 a.m.
Originally Broadcast: August 2, 2006
Praise At Midnight
Life, culture and racism are the topics of this edition of Radio Curious, in conversation with attorney/novelist Martha McCabe, author of, “Praise at Midnight.” Martha McCabe worked as a civil rights and criminal trial lawyer in deep east Texas from 1974 to 1985. Her goal was to pour the raw material from her personal experiences as a lawyer into her story. The deeper level into which she fell during the ten year period it took her to complete, “Praise at Midnight,” was the importance of consciousness and self awareness in avoiding the projection of one’s own dark side on to other people and then killing them. She applies this to both local and international levels in her considerations. She and I have been associates, good friends and colleagues since 1969 when we met at the University of Santa Clara where I was a law student. When I spoke with Martha McCabe from her home in San Antonio, Texas on July 29, 2006, we began with her description of the culture of deep east Texas at the time she was living there, 1974 to 1985.
Martha McCabe recommends, “Reading Lolita in Teheran,” by Azar Nafisi and, “Caballero: A Historical Novel,” by Jovita Gonzalez and Eve Raleigh.
