Europera 5 is the last and most diminutive of Cages operas " preceded by Europeras 1 & 2 (1984-1987) and Europeras 3 & 4 (1991) " and was instigated by pianist Yvar Mikashoffs desire for a small, more practical and portable, and more easily performed work in the series, which had its premiere in Buffalo at the North American New Musical Festival on April 12, 1991.

Ilan Pappe: There is still Time to Stop the Gaza Genocide

The bombing of Gaza by Israeli planes and missiles had just begun when Barat and Pappe had this conversation on October 15, 2023. Ilan Pappe is best known for his book: ‘The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine’ Oxford, 2006. It is the history of the 1948 Palestine-Israel War and how around a million people were expelled from their homes at gunpoint, civilians were massacred, and hundreds of Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed. Pappe used newly declassified Israeli documents to prove that ’transfer’ aka ethnic cleansing - was an integral part of a carefully planed strategy in the 1948 war that led to the founding of Israel. Ilan Pappe is Professor of History at the University of Exeter, UK. Frank Barat is a journalist, producer, and activist. He has worked on books with Noam Chomsky, Ilan Pappe, Angela Davis and others. Zac Unger: Looking Polar Bear Endangerment In The Eye (re-broadcast)

We have all seen the mournful image of an unhappy polar bear isolated on a melting ice floe. It conveys the doom of that one bear as well as his species, and implies that we are all headed in that direction if something is not done about global warming. Inspired by such images and his commitment to ecological conservation, this week’s guest on Sea Change Radio, Zac Unger, ventured up to the great white north to check out the plight of polar bears himself, up close. What he found surprised him. Embedding himself with scientists, Unger learned about how the bears are adjusting their diet, fasting periods and even breeding behavior in response to the warmer, longer summers that climate change is bringing. These adaptations, in conjunction with hunting prohibitions instituted late in the 20th century, have allowed the polar bear population to flourish. The picture that Unger paints of this robust, adaptable species stands in stark contrast to the impression most of us have of the endangered polar bear. While some climate change deniers are exploiting Unger’s work to make their case, it’s important to keep in mind that his book, Never Look a Polar Bear in the Eye, also demonstrates that global warming is indeed happening, and that the only route to survival, for any of us, is adaptation. Unger’s journey and discoveries also raise questions about the eventual impact that the bear’s adaptations will have on polar ecosystems, and critically consider the changing role of scientists as advocates.

Sloths live in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, but Tornero lives in San Diego. A favorite at the San Diego Zoo, Tornero is the subject of Georgeanne Irvines latest book,Teaching Tornero: The True Story of a Sloth Superstar. Georgeanne Irvine works in the publishing office at the San Diego Zoo, and has written more than 50 books about animals, but this is the first one about sloths. The kids talk with her about Torneros extraordinary life at the San Diego Zoo, and we learn a bit about the different species of sloths. Then, Jo from our Kids Crew reviews Teaching Tornero. The book is geared toward elementary aged kids, and is full of stunning photos of Tornero at the zoo throughout his lifetime. Then we head down to Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica where we meet Sam Trull. She is a founder of theSloth Institute, a conservation organization dedicated to saving sloths who are orphaned, or injured. Sloths in Costa Rica face numerous challenges, including electrocution from the commonplace, uninsulated electrical wiring used throughout the country. Sloths are also prone to becoming orphans as a result of their mothers being injured, killed, and the ever-shrinking habitat they call home. Even the loss of one tree can be devastating for a sloth population. We learn how we can support sloths no matter where we live, by refusing to participate in invasive, exploitive sloth tourism. Sam Trull explains that anywhere people are allowed to interact up close, or pet sloths, they are actually harming the animals. Sloths are solitary, and the best way to enjoy them in the wild is to quietly observe them in the tree canopy while staying far away from them, or seeing them from the ground. Learn about the Paleolithic Ground Sloth, a mega fauna that thrived on the American continent for millions of years until just 11,000 years ago, when humans made them extinct. This is important when listening to the body because the statements made were not influenced by any of the material presented, even the clip from Nelson Mandela – which I hadn’t heard before. The statements are crafted from thoughts I have had or thoughts I have compiled throughout the previous two decades. I began speaking about Russia’s attack on Ukraine, trying to unfold the confusion surrounding the tragic attack on Ukraine. I then move to the conflict in the state of, well in the United States the state would be called Israel but outside the U.S the state would be called Palestine. This was a very difficult episode to record and at multiple points I thought about abandoning it altogether because my statements are very much all over the place as I try to wrestle with the complex circumstances within each.
