Israel's military assault on Jenin; Phil Weiss explains his past
July 12, 2023, 9:14 a.m.
Jenin, a defenseless Palestinian refugee camp, is still under full Israeli military assault. Vigilante style attacks by Jewish settlers have raised the level of resistance by Palestinians. Israel supports its settlers’ vigilantism by bombing civilian populations in much the same way they have done numerous times in Gaza. We begin with typical BBC Reports from the area, pointedly including a reported recent Palestinian retaliatory attack in Tel Aviv. Ali Abunimah of The Electronic Intifada was allowed to respond, but only briefly. Finally, we have an eyewitness report by a husband and father who lived through this brutal attack with his family: "Buildings may crumble, cars may be reduced to wreckage, and countless individuals may be detained, wounded, and even martyred. However, these actions will only serve to breed a new generation that will carry the torch of resistance passed down by those who came before them, as we do today, and as our children will do in the future. …”
We follow this with an informal talk by Mondoweiss founder-editor Phil Weiss, briefly in Lincoln to engage with local activists. He recounts his past life, during which he was employed as a reporter for the mainstream New York Observer, where he gradually learned about Israel's brutal occupation of Palestine. His increasing concern got him fired by none other than Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner. For more detail, see https://mondoweiss.net/2017/01/jared-kushner-israel/.

In Memory of Bertolt Brecht (Archive)
July 12, 2023, 3:32 a.m.
Bertolt Brecht and many other artists in post WWI Germany were courageously and proudly democrats, socialists or communists. They had experienced the horror of the first World War and were determined to prevent a second one. So when Hitler and the Nazi party actually assumed state power in 1933 they were all marked and most of them left the country immediately. Their exodus destroyed much of the cultural/political rebellion of the 1920s.
Even though Brecht, the playwright, poet, director and theoretician of the stage, was persecuted by the Nazi’s, he was forced to leave his home in exile in the US when he was accused of being a communist. Nevertheless he did become a major influence on visual and performance artists such as Jean Luc Godard, Robert Wilson, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Augusto Boal, Pina Bausch, Dario Fo and many others.
His most famous plays, the Threepenny Opera and the Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny were just two of over sixty plays. During the war years, Brecht became a prominent writer of the “Literature in Exile”. He expressed his opposition to the National Socialist and Fascist movements in his most often performed plays: Mother Courage, The Good Person of Szechwan, The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Fear and Misery of the Third Reich, and The Life of Galileo - that he revised after the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. One of his most searing, funny, frightening and historically accurate plays against Hitler is The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. The play followed precisely the stages of the Nazi’s seizure of power and posed the most important question: Could Hitler’s rise have been stopped?
For Brecht’s 100ds birthday in 1998 the Royal National Theatre from London, under their first formidable woman director Di Trevis, gave a performance in his honor in San Francisco. They presented songs, and read from poetry and plays. I was given permission to record the songs during the dress rehearsal and include them in this broadcast. They are, in order of appearance: Song of the SA Man, The Seven Deadly Sins, To a Portable Radio, The Ballad of the “Jewish Whore” Marie Sanders, To Those Born Later, Hollywood Elegy, The Moldau, and Everything or Nothing.
This rebroadcast in July 2023 calls attention to the fragile edge between war and peace; and fascism and democracy, that might lead to WWIII.

Nithin Coca: The Impacts of Plant-Based Meats
July 11, 2023, 7:08 p.m.
The new generation of veggie burgers do taste more like meat than their sawdust-leaning predecessors. And most agree that plant-based meat alternatives are a step in the right direction, considering the hefty impact that cattle have on the environment. But the Impossible Burgers and Beyond Meats of the world come with their own not-so-insignificant carbon challenges. This week on Sea Change Radio, we speak with environmental reporter Nithin Coca about his research for Vox.com on the impact of these popular plant-based meats on agricultural supply chains around the globe. We talk about the rapid growth of the market sector, take a look at how it affects the coconut oil and cacao butter industries, and, while we are at it, get a snapshot of lab grown meats, as well.

WINGS #13-23 Religious Cults in Kenya
July 10, 2023, 9:31 p.m.
Pastor Margaret Machuki is the Kenya Representative for Re-Forma Global, a training institution of the Christian evangelical movement. She answers questions posed by reporter Diana Wanyonyi about the shocking discovery of hundreds of cult members found starved to death in her country, and about her views on how to curb the power of cults. She advises that if men were better husbands and fathers, women would not fall for cults in desperation; also, that biblical reasoning could be used to refute cult ideas, and that government and community need to play a watchful role. (Note: Her broadest definition of cults encompasses most of the world's religions, but she concedes others may choose to modify the list.)
