Missiles to Ukraine - for World War III?

Sept. 18, 2024, 5:30 a.m.
Print and Internet media in mid September 2024 were filled with speculation whether the U.S. would agree with the UK to allow Ukraine to use long-range missiles to strike deep inside Russia. The Miami Herald from September 16, 2024, wrote: US may let Ukraine fire missiles deep inside Russia. Here’s why experts say it’s risky. The leading argument by politicians for an incursion into Russia is the often repeated statement that Putin plans to take over all of Ukraine and move on from there. A secret guarded for over two years now is the fact that the fist meeting to end the war, was held four days after the start of the invasion, between Ukrainian and Russian negotiators in Belarus. A second and third round of talks took place on March 3 and 7, 2022, and a fourth and fifth round were held on March 10 and 14 in Turkey. However US State Department staff under Victoria Nuland and the UK government under Boris Johnson intervened and pressured Zelensky not to accept the deal. By strange coincidence right in the middle of this current September 2024 period of possible escalation to nuclear war, the Grayzone announced on Sept. 15, 24, that “Former US State Dept. official Victoria Nuland acknowledges openly that the US and UK sabotaged peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in April 2022. The Grayzone's Max Blumenthal and Aaron Mate explain. A week earlier, Sep 7, 2024 Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, retired United States Army Colonel and former chief of staff of Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke at a conference of the Washington, DC, based Schiller Institute. He is deeply concerned about the abrogation - by the U.S. - of the treaties to abandon or reduce nuclear weapons systems. All the speeches, letters and events in this program come in the context of a New York Times article from Aug. 20, 2024. They broke the story that the Biden Administration last March had quietly approved a new “Nuclear Employment Guidance” involving preparing to fight and “win” a three-front nuclear war against Russia, China and North Korea. DATE: August/September 2024

Veterans for Peace Convention 2024: Resisting Repression

Sept. 17, 2024, 3:36 p.m.
A Zoom webinar from the Veterans for Peace 2024 convention (August 16 -18), presented here with their permission. https://www.veteransforpeace.org Moderator: Joshua Shurley Panelists: Jodie Evans, Jesse Nevel, Allie Wong In the face of escalating efforts by the US government to marginalize peace groups, journalists, activists, and other dissenting voices, this timely panel discussion examines strategies to navigate the current landscape of censorship, repression and persecution. Our panel of activists—Jodie Evans of CODEPINK, Jesse Nevel of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement, and Allie Wong of Columbia University—share their firsthand experiences and insights with being targets of these malign efforts. From media smears to financial targeting to malicious legal prosecution, these tactics aim to silence those who challenge the status quo and manufacture consent for a wide range of despotic global and domestic policies that harken back to the bad old days of the Red Scare. What lessons can we draw from these experiences to strengthen our collective voice and protect civil liberties and the pursuit of peace? Together, we'll explore effective strategies for building solidarity, resistance, and resilience in the fight against this ongoing tyranny as we seek to build a culture of peace. Jodie Evans is the co-founder and a current board member of CODEPINK. She has been a visionary advocate for peace for decades, as evident through the numerous documentary films she has produced and the books she has written. Whether in board rooms or war zones, legislative offices or neighborhood streets, Jodie’s enthusiasm for a world at peace infuses conciliation, optimism, and activism wherever she goes. More recently, she and her group have been targeted by senior members of Congress for their calling out of US policies of genocide and reckless brinksmanship. Jesse Nevel became active in the movement for reparations to African people in 2010 when he met Chairman Omali Yeshitela and the African People's Socialist Party (APSP) in St. Petersburg, Florida. He has served as the National Chair of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement (USM) since 2014, building white solidarity with African Liberation and reparations, under the leadership of the APSP. In 2017, Jesse ran for mayor of St. Petersburg, Florida with the slogan, “Unity Through Reparations!” Along with Chairman Omali Yeshitela and Penny Hess, Jesse is one of the Uhuru 3 facing bogus charges of failing to register as Russian agents.. ***The 3 were since acquitted on that charge, but convicted on the less serious charge of conspiracy.*** Allie Wong is a PhD student in communications at Columbia University in New York City, and one of the recent student organizers during the Justice for Palestine protest movement. Her research areas explore how dis/misinformation, conspiracy theories, and radicalization inform domestic extremism and foreign policy. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies an M.A. in International Affairs from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and a BA in Human Rights Peace and Nonviolent Activism from New York University. Allie has served as a consultant on Middle Eastern regional security issues to various think tanks, research institutes, and international NGOs. Joshua Shurley is the current national vice president of Veterans For Peace. In addition to teaching political science at Fresno City College, Josh is a former conflict researcher specializing in US foreign policy in Africa, is the the lead organizer of VFP Chapter 180 in Fresno, California, and is involved in several organizations, projects, and committees related to peace and resistance to imperialism.

26th Annual Kateri Peace Conference

Sept. 15, 2024, 5:06 p.m.
The 26th Annual Kateri Peace Conference was held in Fonda, NY on September 13th and 14th, 2024. Over the years the Kateri Peace Conference in Fonda, NY has worked to confront the waste and destruction of militarism and war, the suffering and injustice wrought by systemic racism; the devastation and desolation our embrace of unbridled materialism has wreaked on the planet. The hope has been to sow the healing seeds of light and love, seeds germinated from the core belief that we journey on this vulnerable planet as sisters and brothers understanding fully our need to care for each other with patience and kindness. This year is sadly no different. In fact the imperative to confront feels even greater: the climate is in serious decline and very close to collapse; the threat of nuclear war is ever present and pressing; US foreign policy is supportive of and promoting multiple conflicts across the planet including the genocide in Palestine, the war in Ukraine, multiple conflicts in Africa, Latin America, the Middle East. The nation is divided and electoral politics promise to bring us one of two presidential candidates who are both entrenched in the war machine. Militarism is exacerbating climate destruction both home and abroad and devouring needed resources for climate restoration. The imperatives feel greater than ever. If the privilege of political apathy in not abandoned now by all of us and peaceful and life affirming solutions are not adopted and integrated systemically, the consequences of our choices will exceed our expectations in the worst possible way. Time is not on our side. To help define and illuminate some of the moment’s imperatives, we have assembled an exceptional group of presenters all of whom are dedicated to non-violence and the quest for a sustainable, life affirming planetary future. Our roster includes: Brad Wolf, Martha Hennessy, Brian Terrell, Vera Anderson and Ann Wright. Bar Crawl Radio will again be covering the conference. Please consider adding your voice and wisdom to this year’s Kateri conversation. John Amidon Maureen Aumand https://kateripeaceconference.org Brian Terrell is an Iowa based peace activist who has spent more than six months in prison for protesting targeted assassinations at U.S. military drone bases. Brad Wolf is executive director and co-founder of Peace Action Network of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. A former lawyer, prosecutor, professor and community college dean, he writes for various publications. He recently edited a new book on the writings of Philip Berrigan entitled A Ministry of Risk.
