Leonard Peltier - Prayer Vigil for his Parole in San Francisco

June 26, 2024, 2:08 a.m.
For the first time in 15 years, Leonard Peltier had a full parole hearing on Monday, June 10, at the United States Penitentiary at Coleman, Fla.  The decision whether he will be free will be rendered by mid July 2024. Peltier is Turtle Mountain Ojibwe. He has been incarcerated for 48 years for the alleged killing of two FBI agents at Oglala on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in June 1975. For five decades, Peltier has maintained his innocence and hoped for the chance to clear his name.    Peltier had a controversial trial marred by falsified testimony, and fabricated evidence. And criticism of the trial even came from judges involved in the case. And in 2017, former U.S. Attorney James Reynolds wrote a letter to President Obama to support clemency for Peltier. Reynolds was the federal prosecutor involved in the legal proceedings against Peltier.    Tony Gonzales was one of the organizers of the prayer vigil for Leonard Peltier held in San Francisco on June 10. He founded AIM West - the American Indian Movement West, in 2007. In 1982 Tony Gonzales begun working with the International Indian Treaty Council, the first Indigenous NGO in the United Nations, and eventually became the UN Liaison.

This week on Sea Change Radio, the second part of our discussion with former San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin. In this episode, we examine why “tough on crime” legislation can have such deleterious outcomes, talk about the problems with recall elections, and look at the work Boudin has embarked on at the UC Berkeley School of Law. Then, we dig into the Sea Change Radio archives to revisit a portion of our previous conversation with Kevin Ortiz, a San Franciscan who learned firsthand how hard it can be to extricate oneself from legal entanglements.

Michael Shuman — "Keeping the Culture of Small Towns"

June 21, 2024, 7:30 a.m.
Years ago, before the myriad of things to buy were as available as they are now, retail businesses were most often locally-owned and operated, often for generations. This all began to change in the middle of the last century, as many of the items in the Sears Catalogue became available in towns and cities across the nation for consumers to feel and touch. But, it wasn’t until approximately 25 years ago when Wal-Mart, Target and other big-box stores appeared nationwide in small communities, to the detriment of locally-owned businesses and the social and economic benefits those businesses provided to their communities. Michael Shuman, an attorney and an economist, is the author of, “The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses are Beating the Global Competition.” This book addresses the issues and problems of locally owned businesses and how they can successfully compete with the big-box stores owned by corporations foreign to the region. We began our conversation, which occurred on January 21, 2008, when I asked Michael Shuman to describe how a corporation comes into being, as a basis to understand some of the problems of locally owned businesses in competition with the big box stores. The book he recommends is, “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work,” by John Gottman.

Overcoming Colonialism and Rediscovering Indigeneity: A National Indigenous Peoples Day Special

June 20, 2024, 5:32 p.m.
This episode of the Global |Research News Hour is dedicated to June 21, labelled National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada, a day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Indigenous peoples of Canada. This episode attempts to give voice to the Indigenous people in our community and help them establish their own mechanisms in cultural practices to make it back to their non-colonized identities, and rescue their language, their knowledge and their culture from the brink of extinction, On the show this week, is a knowledge keeper by the name of Wally Chartrand, who graciously shared the teachings he had received over the course of his life, including a common one about Sweet-grass. But this talk also references the attempts to impose cultural amnesia on a people and the positive sense of retrieving ancient ways and finally coming back home. The host this week is an Indigenous associate of mine, who goes by the spiritual name of White Thunderbird.
