New World Notes: #545 -- Norman Finkelstein on Palestine (R)

Date Uploaded: 2018-08-12 13:05:40.0
Norman Finkelstein reviews the horrors of Israel's attacks on Gaza and explores Palestine's three options for regaining its freedom. Two of them--diplomacy and armed struggle--have failed to work. That leaves nonviolent mass resistance--with animmediate focus on ending Israel's blockade of Gaza. The tactic has worked before, including in Palestine's FIrst Intifada. It can work again--if Palestine can overcome the handicaps of a demoralized population and corrupt political leaders.

Building Bridges: Abortion Rights, SCOTUS & Kavanaugh

The Supreme Court Doesn't Have to Overturn Roe to Decimate Abortion Rights
with
Talcott Camp, ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project

Now that Pres. Trump has nominated Brett Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court, it will be up to the Senate to fully vet him so that the American people can determine whether he will uphold the basic civil rights and liberties relied on by everyone in this country. This is particularly true when it comes to abortion rights, where Kavanaugh's prior opinions on the subject, coupled with the fact that Donald Trump vowed to only nominate justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade, give rise to serious concern about womens continued ability to access abortion if Kavanaugh is confirmed. A new Supreme Court Justice could effectively decimate womens access to abortion, even without overturning Roe outright. Overturning Roe would be catastrophic, but it is not the only scenario in which politicians would be able to shut down abortion care. The court can give them back the power to do so by simply upholding whatever obstacles they throw in a woman's path.

Today we offer another of our five shows devoted to covering the conference "Balfour’s Legacy: Confronting the Consequences," held on November 11, 2017 at the First Parish Church in Cambridge MA. This conference commemorates the 100th anniversary of the so-called Balfour Declaration, a 67-word letter in 1917 signed by the openly racist and antisemitic Lord Arthur Balfour, then Britain's Foreign Secretary. It's credited with setting in motion the creation of the state of Israel on Palestinian land, without consulting Palestinians.

This time we are presenting the first of three panels, with the title "Balfour, Israel and Palestine." The three speakers and their subjects are as follows:

Lawrence Davidson (West Chester University)
Balfour and the Zionist Project

Susan Akram (Boston University School of Law)
Balfour and International Law

Thomas Suárez (Author, "State of Terror: How Terrorism Created Modern Israel")
The Role of Terror in the State-Building Process

This panel was facilitated by Hilary Rantisi of the Middle East Initiative at Harvard Kennedy School of Government. It was recorded by our associate, Noble Larson, with minor edits by Stan Robinson.

This painfully frank dispatch from the @TheAngryindian directly addresses the dangerous and embarrassing phenomenon of pro-White Racialist, pro-Fascist, non-European acquiescence operative within Portland, Oregon (#PDX) and across the entire non-settler, US political spectrum. The host of FWR asks our regular listeners: Are self-colonising non-Europeans – those consciously willing to stand guard at the front-lines of the radical Anglophone push to re-institute unapologetic White Power by gleefully fronting for the extreme factions within the Eurosettler (Far-Right) US Republican Party – morally responsible for the White racist violence they unambiguously have chosen to forcefully represent?

EXTRAS: The usual mix of political PSAs; archived news clips; the Sounds of Resistance and a special archived audio report of complied voices of the post-war Zionist movement and the difficult, personal issue of common morality; political honesty and group-solidarity within the Jewish World after World War Two and the founding of the State of Israel.

All this and much more on, 4WR.
