This Week In Palestine: Yousef Munayyer's keynote address at the recent Balfour...

Date Uploaded: 2018-07-21 15:17:11.0
Today we repeat the first of what will be five consecutive shows, each recorded at the conference titled "Balfour’s Legacy: Confronting the Consequences," held on 11-11-2017 at the First Parish Church in Cambridge MA. This conference commemorated the 100th anniversary of the so-called Balfour Declaration, a 67-word letter in 1917 signed by Lord Arthur Balfour, then Britain's Foreign Secretary. It's credited with setting in motion the creation of the state of Israel on Palestinian land, without consulting Palestinians.

We begin today with the keynote address delivered by Yousef Munayyer, Executive Director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (uscpr.org), [formerly named the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation (2001-2016)].

Munayyer explains that Balfour was racist and antisemitic as confirmed by his own words, and his support of the Zionist project was clearly motivated by his disdain for Jews, not to mention utter disrespect of Arabs. Balfour wrote to the British Prime Minister that "... We do not propose even to go through the form of consulting the wishes of the present inhabitants of the country ... the 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land."

The conference was sponsored by the Alliance for Water Justice in Palestine and the Trans Arab Research Institute. The quality of the presentations was impressive, and we want to bring you as many of them as possible over the next several weeks on This Week In Palestine.

We are indebted to our colleague Noble Larson for most of the recordings we'll hear from this conference. Like many old church sanctuaries, this one presents a big challenge for older listeners and recordists alike. Noble surmounted that challenge, obtaining signal from the official mikes. He produced videos of the entire proceedings, from which he gave us the audio. Those videos are currently online, as follows:

Latin Waves : David Bacon, Current Immigration under Trump

Date Uploaded: 2018-07-21 13:48:33.0
David Bacon is a photojournalist, author, political activist, and union organizer who has focused on labor issues, particularly those related to immigrant labor. He has written several books and numerous articles on the subject.

His most recent book is In the Fields of the North / En los campos del norte: , David Bacon documents the experiences of some of the hardest-working and most disenfranchised laborers in the country: the farmworkers who are responsible for making California Americas breadbasket. Combining haunting photographs with the voices of migrant farmworkers.

Host Sylvia Richardson speaks to David about how US foreign policies combined with regressive trade agreements have been responsible for displacing millions of people from countries like El Salvador, Haiti and Mexico, and how Trump is adding insult to injury by repealing the TPS Status (Temporary Protected Status) from people who have been living and contributing to American society for many decades. And how as citizens we must stand together and protect those most vulnerable despite who the president is.

Building Bridges: Trump Attacks 1.2 Million Federal Workers Represented by Unions

Date Uploaded: 2018-07-20 15:34:43.0
Post Janus: Trump Attacks 1.2 Million Federal Workers Represented by Unions
with
Joe Davidson who writes the Federal Insider, a Washington Post column on the federal government. He is a founding board member of the National Association of Black Journalists and is in its Hall of Fame.

Step two in Trumps attack on the public sector unions has begun with the implementation of his 3 Executive Orders seriously curtailing Federal workers union rights. These union are already prohibited from requiring workers to pay any dues or fees, cannot bargain over pay and are prohibited from striking. Now Trump's is declaring a federal workers wage freeze for the new fiscal year. Yet Trumps EOs go further by restricting union representatives access to paid time to represent workers, proposals making it easier and faster to fire workers under civil service regulations and revising the ground rules for negotiations for union contracts . Even before the executive orders were issued, the Education Dept unilaterally imposed a contract on workers who had rejected it. Nineteen federal workers unions have sued the administration to thwart the executive orders. They have also gained support from a bipartisan group of current and former members of Congress who filed a brief denouncing the presidents executive orders.

And these are but the first steps . Trump is promising more "reforms" before
the Nov.elections. Many of these efforts have been overseen by James Sherk, a former Heritage Foundation labor economist who joined Trumps transition team to tackle labor challenges. He now sits on the low-profile Domestic Policy Council. At Heritage, Sherk wrote policy papers on the need to roll back public employee labor rights. He helped Wisc. Gov. Scott Walker (R) engineer a plan to bust the states employee unions in 2011.
