United States of America: Higher Education Under Attack

Date Uploaded: 2018-09-18 19:42:23.0
There are 1.5 trillion dollars in outstanding student debt. It is not an accident. University professors and faculty are treated like industrial labor inputs. Administrators increase in numbers and payroll to the detriment of the universities ability to meet student needs but in sync with neoliberal and business management ideology.

State governments are intentionally under-funding their universities, blaming deficits that they created by under taxing big corporations and the wealthy.

Macek cites Nancy MacLean's book, Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America, and the multi-decade plotting of major corporations , the Koch brothers and like to take control of State houses in order to push through a backward, reactionary and sociopathic agenda. He lays out his thesis at the beginning and then offers some thoughts on fighting back through direct actions, as was seen in 2012 in Chicago and recently in West Virginia, Arizona and Oklahoma.

Steve Macek , Professor in Communication and Media Studies at North Central College ,and a member of the Executive Committee of the Illinois American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

This Week In Palestine: Aida Touman-Sliman on Israel's new, Orwellian, "Na...

Date Uploaded: 2018-09-18 19:04:33.0
Today we feature Aida Touman-Sliman, a Palestinian citizen of Israel and current member of the Knesset. To her enormous credit, Aida is a constant thorn in the flesh of the Israeli establishment. She focuses on the details of the recently-passed, Orwellian, "Nation-State" law, which officially establishes apartheid as the law in the entire “land of Israel” from river to sea.

Also discussed: Trump's continuing weaponization of U.S. foreign aid, for example his cessation of $360 million annual contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for Palestine Refugees, depriving it of a third of its budget. This move follows an announcement the prior week that Washington had slashed $200 million from other aid programs for the Palestinians. About five million Palestinians, many languishing for decades in refugee camps across the Middle East, have relied on the agency for essential food, healthcare and education.

The Alembic Files: National Security and Individual Freedom

This is a series based on a speech given at Harvard across April 27 and 28, 1955, by John Lord O’Brian, whose government service on behalf of the people is impressive, and one need only search his name to get a sense about the issues he felt most deeply.
But no issue could have moved him more than the one to which he spoke at Harvard as part of the institution’s venerated Godkin Lectures on the Essentials of Free Government and the Duties Of the Citizen.
Although it would have saddened him to find that his worst fears had been realized, O’Brian warned of the government’s use of terror or the threat of terror to induce its citizenry to relinquish its liberties for the specious promise of security.
And here we are.
