Back in 2008, 250 workers at the Republic Windows and Doors plant in Chicago occupied the factory for six days after it shut down and evicted the workers without notice in the midst of an economic crisis. The national spotlight on the workers' occupation forced the reopening of the plant, this time with a new owner. But in February the new owners again tried to close. The workers had enough. This time they decided to buy the factory themselves, joining a growing movement toward worker-owned businesses, where the workers themselves own the means of production. It's a strategy with roots in the 19th century labor movement, and an argument for the democratization of capitalism itself.
