On Thursday, former Argentine dictators Jorge Videla and Reynaldo Bignone were convicted of directing the systematic abduction of infants born in clandestine torture and detention centers to women detainees, who were killed after delivering their babies. The infants were then given to adoptive families close to the military. The convictions vindicate 36 years of efforts by the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo to identify and locate the stolen children, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
