The short editorial and accompanying cartoon were condemned as racist by many people. Niigaanwewidam James Sinclair, a member of the University of Manitoba's Native Studies department, went to Morris to try to meet with the editor and others in the community. Sinclair is from the Little Peguis First Nation in Manitoba. He is the author of numerous works of fiction and non-fiction, including the anthology Manitowapow for which he recently won the 2012 On the Same Page competition.
