BOOKS & DISSENT: PROTEST, SEDITION AND FIGHTING FOR REPRESENTATION (9th April 2019)
https://friendsofredlandlibrary.org.uk/recent-events/
Redland Library’s latest Desert Island Books ranged over subversion, conspiracy and direct action, as expert panellists recommended their favourite ‘Books & Dissent’.
The event was organised by Friends of Redland Library, who invited members of the panel to talk not only about a book on the theme of dissent, but also to choose a ‘wild card’ – a book in any genre that they would like to have on the desert island.
Panellist Colin Davis, Professor of Cognitive Psychology, University of Bristol and member of Extinction Rebellion
Colin discussed the theory of protest with his pick, Disobedience and Democracy: Nine Fallacies on Law and Order by Howard Zinn. As Colin explained, Zinn challenges arguments against direct action and makes the case for civil disobedience. “Democracy is not just a counting of votes, it’s a counting of actions,” he said.
Colin developed the discussion of civil disobedience with his ‘wild card’, Your Heart is a Muscle the Size of a Fist by Sunil Yapa, a novel based on the 1999 WTO riots in Seattle.

Something I continue to be amazed about the worldwide "sympathy", which is expressed immediately after the fire. All the Western leaders tell their "horror". Most of the media reported "live" about it.
What I find hypocritical, because in the past few years, HUNDREDS of Christian churches in France, Germany, Italy and Austria, but also in Syria and elsewhere, they are set on fire, damaged, desecrated, and been desecrated, but none of these tears pushers have expressed a word of protest about it.
Why? Out of consideration for the "guests" of a different Religion?
As I listened to the statement by Merkel over Notre Dame, a lot of me. She said: "Notre Dame is a Symbol of France and our European culture. With our thoughts we are with French friends."
Which word has you deliberately omitted? The word "Christian", not "a Symbol ... of our CHRISTIAN European culture".
Why is this bothering me? Because Merkels party, Chairman of the "Christian Democratic Union" (CDU) is/was. If you "leads Christian" in the name, you should defend Christianity.
For me, the CDUs been a long time, neither Christian nor democratic, and Merkel has confirmed this. For Merkel, and the whole party, which has formed 13 years after its introduction, Germany and Europe, NOT a Christian society anymore.
The Christian message is, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself" means just that, your Next, the next is so family, friends, and neighbors.
