On May 4th of this year, an important event took place at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. It was a forum called ânot backing downâ and dealt with the constant assault by pro Israeli organizations to shut down pro Palestinian voices. Ironically, which in fact made the point, there were serious attempts to prohibit this very forum from taking place by the Zionist lobby, including an unsuccessful lawsuitâ¦which emphasized the need for this forum to challenge this systematic campaign to silence the Palestinian narrative.
Today we feature voices from the UMass forum, the third of our presentations of the event on This Week In Palestine. You will hear moderator Vijay Prashad, Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour, Temple University Prof. Marc Lamont Hill, and Pink Floydâs Roger Waters in a panel discussion which followed the speakersâ presentations. You will hear that there were audience interruptions by pro-Israeli hecklers. We have edited out some interruptions, but have left others so that you can hear how the panelists dealt with this obstructionist behavior. So here is the Panel discussion of the UMass Forum, âNot Backing Downâ.
Begun in 2004, This Week In Palestine (a weekly 8am feature of Truth and Justice Radio (TJR) is an award-winning 45-minute (or more) segment of news from Palestine and discussion of issues relevant to the Palestinians' struggle for freedom from Israel's brutal military occupation and colonization of their homeland. It speaks from the point of view of Palestinians and those who care about them. TJR is aired Sundays 6-10am ET on WZBC 90.3FM, Newton, MA, also streamed live and archived for two weeks at wzbc.org; TJR's modest website, truthandjusticeradio.org, has a link to This Week In Palestine archives back thru 1-6-2008; editions are also accessible at radio4all.net.
