Phil interviews Stephen Gowans about his recent article, "The Catastrophes of the Pandemic are the Catastrophes of Capitalism."
Catastrophes demonstrate whether governments are fit for the job. Gowans says COVID-19 has shown how much better communist countries have performed for their people: China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba. There are also a few capitalist countries that have done well also - Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Gowans plotted deaths-per-country on a matrix along with the wealth of the country. One would think that wealthier countries would do better fighting the pandemic, because they have more resources. But that hypothesis is not proven by the facts.
Communist countries have far outperformed capitalist countries. Phil points out that the Province of Ontario had more deaths than all of China, and the USA had 100 times the deaths of the PRC, even though the USA has only one-fifth of China's population.
Another interesting observation by Gowans is that 3 million people, who succumbed to COVID-19, would be alive today, if the US, UK, Russia, Brazil, and India performed as well as the PRC, Vietnam, Cuba, and North Korea. And the Communist countries did this completely without vaccines, but rather through public health measures.
The Ontario cabinet is full of businesspeople who were elected to "Open Ontario for Business." No wonder they continually opted for keeping their businesses open, people's health be damned!
