The struggle to save Sheikh Jarrah for Palestinians is a long one. In fact, in 2008, while on a delegation to Palestine, we personally visited Sheikh Jarrah during one of the earliest settler takeovers of a Palestinian dwelling in the complex. Israeli settlers had literally occupied a portion of a Palestinian home and lived there simultaneously in the house while the original owners were still living there. This is exactly what is still happening today as settlers are attempting to seize the entire development. Sheikh Jarrah was established by the Jordanian government in 1950 to provide homes for Palestinian driven off their land by as a result of the Israeli military invasions of 1948 and 1967. Yet the occupying Jews are claiming they are recovering their land, which was stolen by Palestinians. The claim is outrageous. Deeds to the land owned by Palestinians go all the way back to the Ottoman Empire.
Here to discuss the current situation in Sheikh Jarrah are Aseel Al Bajeh, legal researcher and Advocacy Officer at Al Haq, and author and journalist, Budour Hassen. The conversation is moderated by Lara Friedman, executive director of the Foundation for Middle East Peace in Washington, DC.
