Supreme Court Decision Subjects Farmworkers to Latest Harvest of Shame with Hugh Baran, Staff Attorney, National Employment Law Project
Legendary journalist Edward R. Murrows HARVEST OF SHAME is among the most famous television documentaries of all time. This long-acclaimed 1960 expos on the plight of migrant farm workers portrayed with brutally honest depictions the working conditions, the living conditions that, as Murrow remarks, "wrong the dignity of man. Now by a 6-3 vote along ideological lines, the Supreme Court has wrought its own harvest of shame as it gutted a California regulation enacted nearly 50 years ago after a campaign by famed union organizer Cesar Chavez. The court said that the law unconstitutionally appropriated private land by allowing union organizers to go on to farm property to drum up union support. The implications of this decision for farmworkers and all labor to unionize is a Harvest of Shame!
