Paul Kagame came to power in Rwanda by criminal and violent means in 1994. He subsequently invaded Zaire resulting in millions of dead and the capture of mineral wealth. All the while he enjoyed the protective support of the US and its allies. Kagame has killed internal opposition and sent assassins abroad to eliminate rivals. Two outstanding women, Victoire Ingabire and Diane Rwigara, have taken political stands against his rule and been sent to prison. But political resistance is growing as was evident at the G7 summit in Quebec.
