In Memory of John Trudell: What it Means to be a Human Being (TWO of TWO)

Dec. 29, 2015, 9:03 p.m.
A combination of poetry and thoughts about history, democracy, intelligence, responsibility and our common future. The many remembrances that were written about John Trudell after his passing on December 8, 2015, showed the extraordinary width and depth of his engagement. Most know of his music and poetry, or of the films that he participated in. Not everybody knew that up to 1979 writing and performing was not even a thought or plan or dream of his. In the ten years prior to 1979 Trudell had participated in the Indians of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island that began in 1969 . From 1973 to 1979, he served as national chairman of A.I.M., the American Indian Movement. This ten year period of activism ended for Trudell on February 11,1979. He had led a march to the FBI headquarters in Washington D.C. when approximately 12 hours later a fire “of suspicious origin” burned down Trudell’s home on the Shoshone Paiute reservation in Nevada, killing his pregnant wife Tina, their three young children, and Tina’s mother. All friends and observers of John Trudell agree that the murder of his family was the turning point in his life. Trudell said he withdrew from the world; and “writing words” became his way “to keep some sanity” and continue to survive. But unlike others who – after such unspeakable loss – retired for the rest of their lives Trudell re-engaged and went public again: He was an early supporter of native Fishing Rights, he participated in the forest protection campaigns of the 1980s. He helped Tribes who resisted uranium mining on their lands. He spoke against nuclear war and was arrested at the site of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in 1981. He became an early voice for climate protection and against carbon pollution. Trudell became one of the eloquent anti corporate critics of so-called western civilization. His extraordinary concept of how the combination of fossil fuels and technology created the most powerful corporate Industrial Reich – as he called it as a play on the Third Reich of Hitler - makes us realize today why the fight for climate protection and against fossil fuel use is so devastatingly difficult. The talk you are about to hear was part of yet another engagement of his. John Trudell supported international campaigns against fossil fuel extraction on Indigenous lands. Here is the conclusion of his talk in support of the U’wa of Columbia whose fight against oil drilling continues to this day.

Richard Lunt: Transparent Solar Cells (re-broadcast)

Dec. 29, 2015, 6:31 p.m.
Imagine a world where every window-laden skyscraper generates its own solar power, where the skylights in your ceiling are a source of light and electricity, and where your iphone charges itself through the power of the sun. What could make this imagined world possible? Photovoltaic solar cells that are as transparent as regular glass. Our guest this week on Sea Change Radio is Prof. Richard Lunt, the lead researcher on the MIT team that developed the technology, an assistant professor at Michigan State University, and co-founder of Ubiquitous Energy, the commercial enterprise through which this energy-capturing glassy-film will be distributed. Lunt talks about the science behind “transparent luminescent solar concentrators” and the opportunities ahead with applications ranging from power-generating car and building windows, to use on every device you can think of, from smart phones to store signs.

Imperialism Sets Aside International Law

Dec. 28, 2015, 1:19 p.m.
Zafar Bangash casts a wide net discussing: -Canadian defense minister's trip to Iraq/Kurdistan region -What motivated the Turkish government to shoot-down the Russian planes that were inside Syrian air-space, violating the Syria's territorial integrity and international law -An armed terrorist win in Syria would turn Syria into another Libya, which NATO turned into total chaos. -The great victory at Homs in Syria. -The complicated situation of the Kurds spread out in Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey. Turkey is especially afraid that the popular local Kurdish forces will link up with the Kurds in Syria, making them stronger and capable of undermining the US puppet Turkish regime. -The flow of smuggled oil from Syria by terrorist groups to Kurdistan areas of Iraq and then back into Turkey and onward to Israel and to Europe. -The slaughter in Nigeria of thousands of followers, including family, of Ibrahim Al- Zakzaky, Shi'ite head of Nigeria's Islamic Movement (IMN), who has spoken out against he corruption of the elite in Nigeria and who is a strong supporter of the Palestinian People. The pretext for the attack is absurd--claiming that Al-Zakzaky's and his supporters planned to kill an army chief, while not one single soldier was killed but thousands of Al-Zakzaky's supporters were massacred. The attack at the Al-Zakzaky compound and school was followed by an attack on Al-Zakzakry's home, resulting in his fourth son following the path of his three bothers being murdered by the military. -The disgrace and irony of Nigeria having a dismal record fighting the Boko Haram terrorists, while "successfully" obliterating thousands of unarmed and peaceful Al-Zakzakry supporters.

"Crisis Mongers" Target Burundi

Dec. 28, 2015, 1:13 p.m.
Le Beni Tazir points out the irony of the "Crisis Mongers" wanting to send in 5000 troops to Burundi to deal with a few neighborhood terrorists in the capital of Bujumbura, while, at the same time, Burundi has over 7000 troops outside the country on peace missions. He rhetorically asks why wasn't foreign intervention called for when Paris was attacked by terrorists? And, he points out that in 2015 there were more murders in Chicago than in the whole country of Burundi. Phil Taylor asks: Why don't they just ask some of the Burundi troops in Somali to return home and keep the peace in one of the neighborhoods in Bujumbura. It seems that logic does not factor into imperialists' thinking. Tazir provides some key information that is never mentioned in the mainstream media, such as: (1) Rwanda is arming invasion forces into Burundi (2) Belgium, the former colonial power, appointed themselves to make the rules for interference in Burundi, including the Deputy PM, Lois Michelle, who wanted to arm people who were fighting President Nkuranziza (3) The EU underwrites the majority of the the African Unions (AU) budget and aptly compares them to the US lobbyists (4) The Burundi Parliament has 40% Tutsi in the House and 50% in the Senate: Not one of the members of Parliament said it was likely there would be genocide in Burundi.
