Getting Cheesy With Cabot Creamery

Dec. 15, 2015, 8:18 p.m.
Many consumers out there have made the choice to be vegan. Be it for the humane treatment of animals, or because of the damaging impact of methane, choosing not to eat dairy seems an ecologically responsible choice. But is there a responsible choice for those of us who enjoy a little parmesan grated on our pasta? This week on Sea Change Radio we speak to the director of sustainability for Cabot Creamery, Jed Davis. We talk about water usage in dairy production, methane capture, the farm co-op model, and packaging for cheese products. Maybe there is a way for us to have our cheese and eat it, too? Then, we re-visit highlights from our discussion with hemp evangelist and author, Doug Fine.

Vandana Shiva: Soil Not Oil (TWO of TWO)

Dec. 15, 2015, 5:35 p.m.
This is the conclusion of the keynote speech by the Indian physicist, ecologist, seed collector, author and founder of many vibrant organizations, Vandana Shiva. She made a moving appeal to commit ourselves - whatever is the land on which our lives depend - to restore the soils that have been depleted and poisoned by industrial agriculture. Such action, she says, doesn't just address the climate crisis it addresses the health crisis that comes from eating industrial food, the water crisis, the desertification, biodiversity, and extinction crisis. Most of all it allows us to reclaim earth democracy, and have an active role to truly deserve the citizenship of the beautiful planet. Shiva is the author of many books, among them: Earth Democracy, Monoculture of the Mind, The Violence of the Green Revolution, and Making Peace with the Earth. She spoke at the Soil Not Oil conference in Richmond, CA, on September 4, 2015.

Out of the Woods - Show #297 - 12-19-15

Dec. 14, 2015, 7:09 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
