Our Common Future Under Climate Change, Part TWO - Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber

Schellnhuber expressed the urgency and the scale of the problem we have to solve: In order to keep global warming below 2 degrees celsius we need to bring about the end of the carbon economy over the next 20 or 30 years. Otherwise we have not the slightest chance of avoiding dangerous climate change.
Schellnhuber says that we live in a deadly economy that destroys the world and are currently making the choice whether to live instead in an economy that is protecting creation. And even if we cannot change the supply side immediately due to the power of corporations we can begin by changing demand through a global social movement as envisioned by the Pope, and by divestment. It's not poverty that destroys the environment but it is wealth, consumption and waste.
Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, AKA John Schellnhuber, most recently came to world attention as a leading scientific adviser to Pope Francis. He was chosen to be one among only four speakers at the presentation of the Pope's global warming encyclical on June 17, 2015. A segment of Schellnhuber's presentation at the Vatican can be heard at the end of this program.
Part of the credentials that brought Schellnhuber to the attention of the Pope may have included: his doctorate degree in Theoretical Physics, and his role as Chief Government Advisor on Climate and Related Issues during Germany's EU Council Presidency and G8 Presidency.
Schellnhuber is climate advisor to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and founder and director of the respected Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). He is Professor for Theoretical Physics at the University of Potsdam and heads the European Commissionâs Global Change Advisory Group and the advisory board of the European Climate Foundation.

Solar Access Warming For Renters

Is your home one of the millions that haven't been able to get solar because you're a renter? The cost of solar panel installation is half of what it was just five years ago, which should be opening up opportunity everywhere. But many homes and businesses are locked out because they don't own their rooftops. The good news is that policymakers are starting to look for creative ways to expand solar access -- just recently, the Obama Administration announced a $520 million initiative for community solar farms which could allow everyone to get on board the renewable revolution. This week on Sea Change Radio, we talk about this community solar initiative in a panel discussion with Adam Browning and Katherine Bagley. Browning is the executive director of the non-profit solar advocacy organization, Vote Solar, and Bagley is an environmental reporter for Inside Climate News.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. Alice Rothchild discusses Israel's push-back against criticism of the occupation

The feature presentation today is taken from a conference on the Israeli Lobby held in April, 2015 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The conference explored the power and influence of the Lobby. Over the next several weeks we will feature some of the voices from this conference. We start this today with our own Alice Rothchild, physician, author and film maker who has personally experienced the Israeli Lobbyâs push back against criticism of Israelâs occupation of the Palestinian people. We include not only her main presentation, but also her response to a couple of questions put to her following her speech.
Before that, we begin with an article written by Samer Jaber, who used to cohost This Week In Palestine when he was studying for his Masterâs Degree at Brandeis University and the JFK School of Government. He is now back in Palestine as a journalist and doing what he does best being an activist resisting the occupation. Samer wrote a piece on the struggle to find employment in occupied Palestine. Finding work is always a challenge. In Palestine it is a struggle. We no longer have Samerâs voice, but we do have his pen. Here is Samer writing on employment in Palestine. [Article is read.]
