Bacteria and You: A Love Story (TWO of TWO) Dr. Jack Gilbert
July 7, 2015, 5:07 p.m.
A recent article in Mother Jones described the work of Dr. Gilbert: "Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you've probably heard about the human microbiome. Research into the composition, function, and importance of the galaxy of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that, when we're healthy, live in symbiotic balance in and on us has become one of the fastest moving and most intriguing fields of scientific study."
Dr. Gilbert wrote: "There are a nonillion bacteria in the world - give or a take a few quadrillion. This almost incomprehensible number is greater than the number of stars in the known universe. Microbes are vital to the success of life on this planet. They perform the vast majority of all metabolic processes, and also control health in every living organism on this planet.
Dr. Gilbert has impressive credentials with the Argonne National Lab. He is the group leader for Microbial Ecology in the Biosciences Division, and manages the Earth Microbiome Project. And he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago, and the Associate Director of the Institute for Genomic and Systems Biology.
This is Part TWO of TWO and the conclusion of his June 2015 talk. Dr. Gilbert begins by talking about birth and how a newborn child receives its first set of bacteria from the mother.
Richard Lunt: Transparent Solar Cells
July 7, 2015, 4:40 p.m.
Imagine a world where every window-laden skyscraper generates its own solar power, where the skylights in your ceiling are a source of light and electricity, and where your iphone charges itself through the power of the sun. What could make this imagined world possible? Photovoltaic solar cells that are as transparent as regular glass. Our guest this week on Sea Change Radio is Prof. Richard Lunt, the lead researcher on the MIT team that developed the technology, an assistant professor at Michigan State University, and co-founder of Ubiquitous Energy, the commercial enterprise through which this energy-capturing glassy-film will be distributed. Lunt talks about the science behind transparent luminescent solar concentrators and the opportunities ahead with applications ranging from power-generating car and building windows, to use on every device you can think of, from smart phones to store signs.

Out of the Woods - Show #274 - 7-11-15
July 7, 2015, 6:12 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

July 4th and Settler Colonialism in North America
July 6, 2015, 12:09 p.m.
On the occasion of July 4th and in the aftermath of Canada Day July 1st, Back in the USSR interrogates colonialism and the settler state in North America. We are still living with the reality and legacy of empire on this continent and this can be seen in every aspect of life and society. But just as empire and the legacy of empire has been overcome in other countries around the world, it can be overcome here. We must stand in solidarity with the struggles of indigenous peoples, build internationalism and unity among working class people, and fight against the real enemy that perpetuates imperialism and injustice on this continent and throughout the world: the capitalist system.
