Bacteria and You: A Love Story
June 10, 2015, 12:17 p.m.
Dr. Jack Gilbert, Environmental Microbiologist at Argonne National Laboratory and Associate Professor in the University of Chicagoâs Department of Ecology and Evolution, will discuss the microbial life on the human body that outnumber our cells 10 to 1. Gilbert â whose work has recently been covered by TIME, Newsweek, and National Geographic â will explore this brave new world, examining some examples of how your microbial world influences your health and highlighting the ways in which your lifestyle, diet and medical treatment can influence your microbiome. He will also discuss how bacteria could help combat Alzheimerâs, autism and cancer. (program)
Eating a big breakfast and having a dog will change your gut bacteria; help you loose weight and reduce allergies. The absence or presence of a single type of gut bacteria can determine fatness or thinness with the same dietary intake. Dr. Gilbert's enthusiastic presentation follows a short promotional film on the research he and others at Argonne National Lab are conducting that portends revolutionary changes for health care and birthing based on the growing knowledge of the evolutionary relationship between bacteria and us, and new technology that can rapidly sequence microbes smaller that one micron. Could it be we are the agents of our bacteria whose mass weigh about the same as the brain? Urban dwellers exist in a drastically reduced microbial environment. Childhood asthma, allergies and obesity are on the rise, in spite of or perhaps due to, the war on microbes. The Amish experience almost no asthma or allergies. Gilbert is researching why, but postulates that it is the rich interaction that their children have with the complex microbiome of the farms. Gilbert's research yields revelations about the significance of bacteria in our own lives and that certain bacteria effect control over behavior. A resourceful and creative scientist, he went to crowd funding to start a large population genomic mapping project that the NIH was too stodgy to see the merit of. You will hear about it in the presentation. He also discusses the role bacteria play in
preventing the immune system from attacking its own host
as happens with colitis and tests with mice that show the addition of one type of bacteria reversing the disease. In the Q&A he explained how the tuberculous bacillus tricks the immune system into killing off the beneficial bacteria that would normally prevent it from multiplying.

Human Rights in the Soviet Union
June 10, 2015, 11:26 a.m.
This week Back in the USSR once again speaks with Brendan Campisi about human rights in the Soviet Union and in particular about how the world's first socialist state empowered women and working people to a degree never before seen in the modern era. From the encouragement of adult education, to ensuring universal paid maternity leave and childcare, to setting up trade unions with the power to hold managers accountable in every economic enterprise, the USSR made sure that the rights of workers and women were not just words on paper. Note that this discussion draws heavily on the book "Human Rights in the Soviet Union" by Albert Szymanski, which is available for free online and which you all should definitely check out.

Green Brewers: New Belgium & Alaskan
June 9, 2015, 5:34 p.m.
This week on Sea Change Radio, we are talking about green beer, and it s not even St. Patrick s Day. First we talk with Jennifer Vervrier, the Director of Sustainability for New Belgium Brewing Co. In a plot twist straight out of a Laverne & Shirley episode, Vervrier worked her way up from the bottling line to head of sustainability in a brewery now known as one of the most ecological in the country.
Recognized for its tasty Fat Tire Amber Ale and other original craft-style brews, New Belgium is a female-dominated company in a male-dominated industry. Then, we revisit host Alex Wise's discussion with the founder of Alaskan Brewing Company, Geoff Larson, as we talk about the challenges his Juneau, Alaska-based company faces in keeping a tiny carbon footprint despite sizable transportation costs.
Don't Bank on the Bomb - The Nuclear Divestment Movement
June 9, 2015, 5:25 p.m.
PAX Christie is the international Catholic Peace Movement based in the Netherlands. Their project, Don't Bank on the Bomb, identified 411 banks, pension funds, insurance companies and asset managers in 31 countries with substantial investments in corporations that produce nuclear weapons.
Don't Bank on the Bomb works with ICAN, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. Together they are organizing appeals to financial institutions to stop investing in the nuclear arms industry, because any use of nuclear weapons violates international law and has catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
Susi Snyder is the nuclear disarmament program manager for PAX and the author of the annual Don't Bank on the Bomb reports. She spoke at the Symposium on the Dynamics of Possible Nuclear Extinction on March 1st, 2015 in New York. The Symposium was organized by the Australian physician and anti nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott.
Snyder was introduced by her friend and colleague Ray Acheson, Director of Reaching Critical Will. That's the disarmament program of the Womenâs International League for Peace and Freedom.

#709 - Facing The Failing Culture Of Control - 2
June 9, 2015, 9:57 a.m.
Power "too cheap to meter" offered humanity a whole lot of control, but that hardly describes what the plutonium industry actually delivered. Our continuing examination of the failing culture of control looks an aspect more serious than climate change - the nuclear power/weapons complex. Our first hour focuses on the close connection between the refinement of the technology of murder and the concomitant degradation of the deliberative process of waging war. Our second hour examines the intimate connections between nuclear war and nuclear power and between the privatization of the nuclear weapons establishment and the abandonment of any kind of effective oversight. The disturbing combination of a nuclear complex beyond government control and a commercially-controlled media which refuses to address the issue will be all too familiar to students of Deep Politics.
Out of the Woods - Show #270 - 6-13-15
June 9, 2015, 7:05 a.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul
