Cecil B. Demented
May 17, 2015, 7:37 a.m.
DEMENTED FOREVER! This week we tap into our first John Waters fare as Savage has us queuing the the cult film Cecil B. DeMented, starring Stephen Dorff, Melanie Griffith, Maggie Gyllenahall, Alicia Witt and a then unknown Mike Shannon. In it, we go behind the scenes with a group of obsessed cinema terrorists whose goal in life is to avenge the crass sins of commercial movie culture through acts of brazen film making and vigilante outlaw cinema retribution. As the movie begins, the title character and his âSprocket Holesâ gang kidnap Honey Whitlock (Griffith), a beloved Hollywood movie star visiting Baltimore for the premiere of her latest blockbuster. Once Whitlock is their prisoner, DeMented (Dorff) and his horny, tattooed crew immediately go into production on Raving Beauty, the ultimate underground movie in which Whitlock is forced to play the insane owner of a failed art theater. Armed with lights, cameras, heavy artillery and courage to burn, DeMented and his guerrilla production team wreak havoc on the Baltimore film scene, hitting targets from the Maryland Film Commission to penetrating the high-security set of a major big-budget sequel. The movie also has a plethora of cameos and âWow, that guy!â cast sneakers â such as Ricki Lake, Kevin Nealon, Eric Roberts, Patty Hearst, and Rosanne Barr⦠We wrap it all up with our Top 3 Directors weâd âHonor with a Tattoo!â

#376 -- The Hidden Ideology of the News Media, Part 2
May 16, 2015, 1:33 p.m.
Another in our series of classic talks by Progressive political scientist MICHAEL PARENTI. This one--one of his best--dates from 1997.
This week, in Part 2, Parenti focuses on examples of U.S. imperialism and predatory corporate capitalism--and the role of the news media in promoting both.
Parenti demolishes the myth of "the liberal media." With wit, humor, facts, and examples, he shows the US news media to be little more than the propaganda arm of the corporations and the government.
Insurgent Trade Unionism in South Africa
May 16, 2015, 10:24 a.m.
Insurgent Trade Unionism in South Africa
featuring
Luke Sinwell, senior researcher at the University of Johannesburg, whose research includes radical theories and practices of participatory governance, social movements and housing struggles,
ethnographic research methods and action research. In addition to his book on Marikana, he is co-editor of Contesting Transformation: Popular Resistance in Twenty-First Century South Africa
The Marikana massacre, which witnessed 34 mineworkers being gunned down by the police August 16, 2012 arguably marked a key turning point in South African history. However, we know very little about the informal networks that were created by mineworkers in order to challenge management not only at Lonmin (Marikana), but also at Amplats and Impala South African. Luke Sinwell works closely with militant workers, especially miners, and the Left, particularly the Democratic Left Front, and will talk about mining, capitalism and the spirit of Marikana. Recently the Democratic Left Front acting in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement in the U.S. held a march on the U.S. consulate in protest against the police murders of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, linking police brutality in the U.S. to what militants face in South Africa.

Should the U.S. Oppose Immigration? A Debate
May 15, 2015, 3:26 p.m.
The U.S. was built on the hard work of its immigrants. The vast majority of Americans are descendants of immigrants.
The U.S. is home to an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. The economic, social, and political aspects of immigration have caused controversy regarding ethnicity, economic benefits, jobs for non-immigrants, settlement patterns, impact on upward social mobility, crime, and voting behavior. Illegal immigration to the United States is the act by foreign nationals violating United States immigration laws by either entering the country without government permission or once lawfully entering, remaining within the country beyond the termination date of a temporary visa.
According to a Pew Hispanic Center report, in 2012, 52% of illegal immigrants were from Mexico; 26% were from other Latin American countries, primarily from Central America; 12% were from Asia; 5% were from Europe and Canada; and 3% were from Africa and the rest of the world. Do immigrants take American jobs or does immigration help the economy or both?
Against immigration is Kris Kobach, Secretary of State for Kansas and Tom Tancredo, former Congressman for Colorado.
For immigration is Julian Castro, Mayor of San Antonio and Tamar Jacoby, President and CEO of ImmigrationWorks USA.

How Did The Son Of A Terrorist Choose Peace?
Zak Ebrahim is the son of El-Sayyid Nosair. El-Sayyid Nosair is an Egyptian-born American citizen, convicted of involvement in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Nosair was also tried for, but acquitted of, the assassination of Rabbi Meir Kahane a Jewish religious figure and right-wing Israeli politician on November 5, 1990. Nosair was convicted of assault and possession of an illegal firearm. Zak tells us that he was raised to hate and but rejected that path.
After his father's incarceration, Ebrahim's family moved over 20 times, haunted by and persecuted for his father's crimes. The older Zak got, the more he grasped the horror of his father's acts. The more he understood, the more he resolved to dedicate his life to promoting peace. This part is narrated by Guy Raz.

Omar Khadr, Guantanamo, and the "War On Terrorism"
May 15, 2015, 11:59 a.m.
In the wake of the recently announced release on bail of Omar Khadr, the Global Research News Hour returns to the case of the young man jailed in the notorious prison camp for nearly a decade.
In the first half hour, Khadr's lawyer Dennis Edney expertly debunks many of the talking points being put forward by critics like the Conservative government and Ezra Levant about Khadr's status as a "Confessed terrorist" and outlines the numerous ways in which the Canadian government violated Khadr's Charter rights.
In the second half hour, Michel Chossudovsky expands on the Khadr tragedy by pointing to a Seymour Hersh article exposing the protection of Al Qaeda militants in theatre and the known incarceration of civilians at Guantanamo. Chossudovsky explains how the facility serves a propaganda function that enables the so-called "War on Terrorism."
Resisting Chevron
May 15, 2015, 11:14 a.m.
On this episode of the show I describe my experiences travelling to Washington D.C. as part of the human rights solidarity committee in the ongoing struggle to hold the American oil giant Chevron accountable for the massive destruction it has caused to the environment and indigenous peoples of Ecuador. All of us who went to Washington to participate in this action along with many others from both North and South America understood that the battle against Chevron is part of the wider struggle against imperialism, colonialism, and the capitalist system in this hemisphere. The American Empire has beaten down and brutalized Latin America for two hundred years, but time and time again the people have risen up, resisted, and refused to be silenced. Now they are united as never before.

May 9th: Russian Victory, NATO Defeat
May 14, 2015, 3:11 p.m.
Chris Black says the point of his latest article, "May 9th: Russian Victory, NATO Defeat," is that the current NATO leaders boycotting the May 9 Moscow Victory Parade was not just about the current war in Ukraine: It is that NATO leaders see the defeat of fascist Germany not as a victory over fascism but as a failure of the western attempt to crush Russia. Black notes the irony that Germany is now a NATO state.
Black traces the political maneuvering of the Western powers to steal the victory of the German surrender from the Soviet government.
Hard Truths for Canada about Israel and Palestine
May 14, 2015, 3:05 p.m.
Michael Keefer, author of new book, Hard Truths for Canada about Israel and Palestine, argues against the Canadian political elite's support for Israeli state policies and argues for massive public solidarity with the oppressed Palestinians.
Keefer condemns the Canadian anti-terrorism act that is used to frighten people out of engagement in solidarity work, including those seeking to end the oppression against the Palestinian People.
Keefer clarifies Canada's actions are in violation of international law, including the First Geneva Convention and the Convention on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid.
When Africa Called: Cuba Answered
May 14, 2015, 3 p.m.
Issac Saney gives a fascinating account of Cuba's internationalist humanitarian role in Africa from defeating the South African Apartheid to providing both medical missions and free medical school education to the Africans to responding immediately to the Ebola epidemic in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea and being instrumental in stopping the Ebola epidemic in Liberia with volunteer doctors on the ground.
Why does Cuba give so much? Cuba felt it owed a debt to Africa due to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and Cuba honors its national hero, Jose Marti, who espoused humanity as a homeland. The Cuban Revolutionary government realized the dream of Jose Marti.
