Christian Parenti - Empire of Chaos:

April 28, 2015, 9:57 p.m.
The talk derived from his 2011 book about the expanding consequences of extreme weather, which is partly fueling the violence and conflict in Africa, the Middle East and threatening Europe. He identified the catastrophic convergence of extreme weather, neoliberal policy, and Cold War militarism, as responsible for the failure of many states. That, and the uninformed arrogance of US planning elites who, since Bill Clinton, have been intoxicated by the license that the absence of a great power rival offered, and were unconcerned when their interventions resulted in chaos, death and destruction. Though it may not be so, China sees that result as intended, as it has blocked it's opportunity to expand trade and economic development in Africa and the Middle East. In addressing climate change, "we have the technology", he says, "to de-carbonize Capitalism", if the elites that are blocking the transition can be threatened through mass action to get out of the way. "We don't have much time, several decades, but all the key pieces are in place to mitigate the disaster we face." The Q& A addresses the campus based divestment movement, the rebellion against toxic air in China, the power of the Clean Air Act, and State purchasing power, the "Big Green Buy", to finance the transition to a renewable economy.

Robert Fisk on the Armenian Holocaust

April 28, 2015, 6:25 p.m.
INTERRUPTING THE NUCLEAR SERIES FOR THIS ONE TIMELY PROGRAM: Interviewing the last exiled survivors of the 1915 genocide before they died in old folk homes in Beirut, Lebanon, where Robert Fisk lives, he has acted more like a historian than a journalist. As the Middle East correspondent for the London Independent, Fisk travelled to massacre sites, compiled lists of victims, as well as of officials who planned the extermination of Armenians in the Ottoman empire. He also identified the rare supporters who refused orders to kill, often at risk of their own lives. In this 2001 talk to Armenian Americans in San Francisco Fisk presented some of that history and proposed an extraordinary plan to break the silence. Now, almost 15 years later, not much has changed and his account is as urgent as before. To this day Turkey denies that this was government planned genocide in spite of the orders by Talat Pasha, the Ottoman interior minister, and Fisk calls that "close to a criminal lie". But - for the first time in 100 years - Turks within Turkey outnumbered Armenians in large public events to demand recognition of the facts of their past that will define how to move into the future. In 2015 Fisk traveled to Turkey to report on Armenians from around the world coming to Turkey and recalling the genocide of their ancestors. All setting an example how to begin a conversation about genocide that defines the history and the present of many other countries, foremost among them the US and the Genocide of Native Americans.

Out of the Woods - Show #264 - 5-2-15

April 28, 2015, 2:49 p.m.
This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Waging Peace with David Harsough

April 28, 2015, 11:53 a.m.
GUEST: DAVID HARTSOUGH TOPIC: WAGING PEACE http://www.amazon.com/David-Hartsough-Waging-Peace-Adventures/dp/B00RWSXTZG/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1425231840&sr=1-2&keywords=WAGING+PEACE+by+DAVID+HARTSOUGH CLICK FOR BOOK INFO World Beyond War "David Hartsough knows how to get in the way. He has used his body to block Navy ships headed for Vietnam and trains loaded with munitions on their way to El Salvador and Nicaragua. He has crossed borders to meet “the enemy” in East Berlin, Castro’s Cuba, and present-day Iran. He has marched with mothers confronting a violent regime in Guatemala and stood with refugees threatened by death squads in the Philippines. Hartsough’s stories inspire, educate, and encourage readers to find ways to work for a more just and peaceful world. Inspired by the examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., Hartsough has spent his life experimenting with the power of active nonviolence. Engaging stories on every page provide a peace activist’s eyewitness account of many of the major historical events of the past 60 years, including the Civil Rights and anti–Vietnam War movements in the United States as well as the little-known but equally significant nonviolent efforts in the Soviet Union, Kosovo, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. Waging Peace is a testament to the difference one person can make; however, it is more than one man’s memoir: it shows how this struggle is waged all over the world by ordinary people committed to ending the spiral of violence and war."
